What are the responsibilities and job description for the Field Engineer position at CiS Technologies?
Key Responsibilities
- Establish & maintain site control: Set jobsite benchmarks, control points, building grids, and control lines; tie control to the project coordinate system and perform closure/recheck procedures throughout construction.
- Anchor bolt verification: Survey anchor bolt locations, spacing, projection, and elevations before steel erection. Compare against contract documents and control, identify tolerances issues, and provide clear reports with coordinates, elevations, sketches/photos, and variance callouts.
- Steel erection control: Establish erection control lines, column lines, benchmarks, and critical offsets. Support layout and verify erected steel for alignment, plumb, elevation, and plan position.
- Dimensional/tolerance verification: Perform milestone and periodic surveys and document as-built vs. design conditions, control points, equipment/method, date/time, and out-of-tolerance conditions. Recommend appropriate actions such as hold, adjust, rework, or RFI.
- Field coordination: Work closely with superintendents, foremen, PMs, detailers, GCs, and survey teams. Coordinate surveys around critical picks and erection sequences and communicate issues early to prevent delays and rework.
- Troubleshooting: Help determine whether dimensional issues originate from anchor bolts, concrete, fabrication, erection, or survey control.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Field surveying or dimensional-control experience in construction.
- Strong knowledge of building grids, control lines, benchmarks, elevations, and construction layout.
- Ability to read structural drawings, anchor bolt plans, shop/erection drawings, RFIs, and field sketches.
- Proficiency with survey/layout instruments and workflows; total station or robotic total station preferred, GPS as applicable.
- Strong documentation skills, including reports, marked-up plans, sketches, coordinates/elevations, and photo documentation.
- Willingness and ability to travel regionally throughout the Southeast.
Preferred Experience
- Structural steel erection and layout for columns, frames, and multi-level steel.
- Digital layout/as-built workflows, including CAD, point files, data collectors, and BIM field points.
- Familiarity with construction tolerance standards and survey responsibility coordination.
Field Requirements
- Comfortable working on active construction sites and in outdoor Southeast conditions.
- Ability to walk jobsites, climb stairs/ladders, work around lifts/cranes, and access elevated areas as permitted.
- Ability to work from elevated platforms and, when required, walk steel structures.
- Familiarity with fall-protection requirements and safe work practices at heights.
- Flexible schedule for critical erection activities, including early mornings and occasional nights/weekends.
Success in the Role
- Maintain reliable site control crews can trust.
- Identify anchor and dimensional issues before they affect steel erection.
- Verify steel is erected within AISC and project-specific tolerances.
- Deliver clear, consistent documentation that supports resolution, schedule, cost control, and dispute protection.
