Behavior Support Specialist
POSITION PURPOSE: Circle of Friends is facilitating change in the educational services that are provided to youth with severe disabilities. We are seeking positive individuals to join our mission! As a Behavior Support Specialist, you will provide consultation and guidance to the school team providing education to youth attending Circle of Friends educational and recreational events and programming.
BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, plans, organizes, coordinates, and is responsible for providing supportive consulting services to assist staff in the development and implementation of school wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), targeted PBIS supports, supports within an alternative education program for students with disabilities.

- Coach special education staff on implementation and maintaining fidelity of evidence-based practices utilizing implementation checklists. Assist staff in development and implementation of interventions through modeling and/or shadowing techniques.
- Meet with school staff as scheduled to provide schoolwide, classroom, and individual student support. Monitor and evaluate effectiveness of interventions and pivots accordingly. Participate in Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings.
- Collaborate with special education staff on systematic behavior support strategies, class wide supports, fidelity of intervention, communication systems, use of instructional strategies and change in placement decisions.
- Coordinate with program specialists and classroom teachers regarding classroom observations by parents and outside agencies.
- Provide topic specific training to teachers and paraeducators on Evidence Based Practices (EBP) specific to classrooms and individuals with special needs.
- Design and deliver behavior intervention plan implementation training and other related in service programs, including student-specific intervention training to staff and parents.
- Process referrals of students for behavior intervention plan services. Complete and submit a variety of forms, evaluations and program reports. Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA). Write Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP). Develop and implement strategies for positive student behavior management.
- Conduct periodic inspections of classroom environments to assure established standards of classroom management and/or plan implementation are maintained.
- Provide support and resources that are specific to behavior needs of schoolwide, class wide and individual students.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all individuals affiliated with the Circle of Friends organization and community partners.
- Ability to follow the regulations associated with Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), and procedural safeguards and Individual Education Plan (IEP) development and implementation for all students on your caseload.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize and resolve issues, and complete the job duties and functions of a behavior support specialist within the appropriate timeline.
- Participates, as needed, during scheduled meetings with the educational team related to program development and team collaboration about classroom and student topics.
- Maintain and organize records and reports. Prepare a variety of professionally written documents in a timely manner.
- Proficiency in using computers and ability to learn related software applications, online tracking systems, internet research tools, reporting applications, document scanner, and various Google system applications (Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Slides).
- Willingness to learn devices, equipment, and program plans that support youth functional and social communication, physical mobility and strength, instruction, health and safety.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Education and Experience:
Current Oregon Teaching License with Special Education endorsement issued through TSPC
Bachelor’s degree from accredited university
At least three years of full-time experience working directly with preschool, elementary, middle, or high school age youth with disabilities and knowledge of Individualized Education Plans (IEP) goal setting process and implementation.

- Ability to implement prescribed intervention services as required under the guidance of a licensed occupational therapist except for temporary disability.
- Ability to participate in frequent lifting/handling/positioning of students weighing up to 35 lbs or ability to lift with assistance (mechanical or adult assistance) students weighing up to 70 lbs during transfers in/out of mobility equipment. You may be required to participate in a job function analysis prior to employment.
- Ability to physically assist students up to 50lbs who can bear weight during standing, walking,or transitioning between equipment
- Ability to follow written health or medical crisis protocols after provided training.
