JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Clinical Practice - Provides skilled assistance in the application and removal of casts, splints, and bracing products for orthopedic patients ensuring proper fit and patient comfort. Serves as an advanced resource for the Inpatient, Emergency, and Surgical Departments within a Medical Center specializing in the care of infants, children, and adolescents. Deliver high-quality orthopedic care and patient/family support through effective collaboration with Ambulatory Services, the Orthopedic Division, and other hospital departments. Perform patient intake duties, such as obtaining vital signs, confirming patient information, documenting medical histories, and preparing exam rooms. Responsibilities include optimizing patient flow, enhancing staff efficiency, and contributing to the development of best practices for orthopedic treatment and patient experience. Demonstrates proficiency in orthopedic techniques, problem-solving in complex cases, and the ability to work independently while maintaining compliance with clinical standards. Interdepartmental Duties - Provides expert instruction and supervision to Pediatric and Orthopedic house staff in the safe and effective application of orthopedic appliances through direct patient care and structured training sessions. Delivers high-quality care to orthopedic patients during emergency room visits and designated times, demonstrating advanced clinical judgment and efficiency. Able to assist with complex casting in OR setting. Maintains strict adherence to sterile precautions during and after orthopedic surgical procedures. Serves as a reliable resource for the Orthopedic team, offering assistance with in-house patients as time permits, and contributes to improving departmental workflows and patient outcomes through collaboration and mentorship. Inventory Management - Demonstrates proficiency in maintaining the casting area, managing inventory, and resolving discrepancies in coordination with the Ortho Tech Supervisor. Accurately captures and records inventory charges through the Pyxis system, ensuring compliance and accountability. Oversees cleanliness and readiness of patient stations after use, proactively identifying and addressing potential safety hazards. Maintains up-to-date knowledge and consistently adheres to CCHMC blood and body fluid precautions. Performs scheduled safety checks on designated equipment, documents actions taken, and promptly escalates issues requiring supervisory attention. Exhibits strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently while supporting departmental efficiency and patient care standards. Compliance - Maintain compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, such as JCAHO, HIPAA, and/or other accreditation standards. Customer Service - Employs advanced, constructive approaches to problem-solving and conflict resolution, demonstrating sound judgment and leadership in complex situations. Actively contributes to identifying opportunities based on customer feedback and evolving needs and works with Supervisor to establishing processes. Facilitates meaningful involvement of patients and families in shared decision-making and goal-setting to achieve optimal care outcomes, ensuring a collaborative and patient-centered approach. JOB QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or equivalent 3 years of work experience in a related job discipline Orthopedic Technologist II – Experienced Provides advanced technical support to orthopedic physicians and surgeons in the treatment of bone and joint injuries across inpatient, emergency, ambulatory, and surgical settings. Delivers high‑quality patient care, ensures efficient clinical workflows, and serves as a skilled resource for staff, patients, and families. Key Responsibilities Assist orthopedic providers with advanced procedures, applying established clinical methods with accuracy, efficiency, and sound judgment. Apply and remove casts, splints, and orthopedic bracing; ensure proper fit, patient comfort, and adherence to clinical standards. Support orthopedic care for infants, children, and adolescents across Inpatient, Emergency, Surgical, and Ambulatory Services. Optimize patient flow, enhance staff efficiency, and contribute to best‑practice development for orthopedic care and patient experience. Provide expert instruction and supervision to Pediatric and Orthopedic house staff on safe and effective application of orthopedic appliances. Deliver high‑quality care during emergency visits and designated clinical coverage times, demonstrating advanced clinical judgment and independence. Maintain strict sterile technique during and after orthopedic surgical procedures. Assist the Orthopedic team with in‑house patients and collaborate to improve departmental workflows and outcomes. Manage casting‑area operations, including inventory control, charge capture (Pyxis), equipment safety checks, and maintaining clean, hazard‑free patient stations. Adhere to blood and body fluid precautions and all institutional safety protocols. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements (JCAHO, HIPAA, etc.). Apply advanced problem‑solving and conflict‑resolution skills; identify improvement opportunities and collaborate with leadership to refine processes. Support patient‑ and family‑centered care through shared decision‑making, education, and clear communication. Qualifications 3 years of hands‑on experience in orthopedic procedures, including casting, splinting, and bracing. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision in fast‑paced clinical environments. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and commitment to safety and compliance. Proven ability to teach, mentor, and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. Excellent judgment, adaptability, and communication skills in complex clinical situations.
