Behavioral Safety Team (Medical-Based Role)

Location: Hospital-Based / Medical Units

Shift: Evening

Position Summary

The Behavioral Health Facilitator (BHF) on the Behavioral Safety Team (BST) provides specialized behavioral health support to patients who are receiving medical treatment and present with a secondary behavioral health need. This hospital‑based role focuses on safety, behavioral assessment, crisis prevention and response, staff coaching, and coordination with interdisciplinary medical teams to support patients with complex behavioral, psychiatric, or developmental needs within medical settings.

Key Responsibilities

Behavioral Health Support in Medical Settings

  • Provide direct behavioral health support to medically admitted patients with secondary psychiatric, behavioral, or neurodevelopmental needs.
  • Conduct behavioral observations, risk assessments, and safety checks in collaboration with nursing and medical providers.
  • Support implementation of individualized behavioral interventions and safety plans within medical units.
  • Monitor patient behavior and mental status; promptly communicate changes to the interdisciplinary medical team.

Crisis Prevention & Response

  • Proactively prevent and respond to behavioral escalations using Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) and trauma‑informed approaches.
  • Respond to behavioral emergencies and support Code Violet responses within hospital‑based units.
  • Support staff during episodes of seclusion or restraint when clinically necessary, ensuring safety and policy compliance.
  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation related to behavioral interventions, crises, and patient safety events.

Staff Support & Clinical Consultation

  • Serve as a behavioral health resource to bedside medical staff by providing coaching on de‑escalation strategies, behavior management, and patient engagement.
  • Collaborate with nursing, physicians, behavior specialists, and other disciplines to support patient care and safety planning.
  • Assist with behavioral assessments, patient rounding, and consultation for higher‑risk or complex behavioral presentations.

Patient & Family Engagement

  • Engage patients and families to support understanding of behavioral expectations, safety plans, and treatment goals within the medical setting.
  • Provide education to families related to behavioral interventions, coping strategies, and safety considerations during hospitalization.
  • Communicate effectively with families and care teams regarding behavioral concerns and progress.
  • Integrate age‑appropriate, developmentally informed, and culturally inclusive practices into patient and family interactions.

Qualifications

  • Required: bachelor’s degree in psychology or a related field
  • Required: 2 years of relevant work experience
  • Preferred: Experience supporting patients with behavioral health needs in medical or hospital‑based settings
  • Preferred: Skills in crisis prevention, de‑escalation, and trauma‑informed care
