Responsibilities
- Collect blood samples from patients using venipuncture or capillary puncture techniques with accuracy and professionalism
- Ensure proper identification and handling of specimens in accordance with laboratory protocols
- Maintain strict aseptic technique during all procedures to prevent contamination or infection
- Prepare patients for blood collection by explaining procedures clearly and providing reassurance, especially in sensitive cases such as pediatrics
- Document all procedures accurately within electronic health records
- Assist with catheterisation procedures when required, adhering to safety standards
- Monitor patients during and after blood collection, recognising signs of adverse reactions and responding appropriately
- Follow infection control policies diligently to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff
- Maintain equipment and supplies, ensuring all tools are sterile and ready for use at all times
- Support laboratory staff with specimen processing as needed
Qualifications
- Proven experience in a hospital or clinical setting specialising in phlebotomy or laboratory work is highly desirable
- Certification in Phlebotomy recognised by relevant health authorities is preferred
- Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology relevant to blood collection procedures
- Familiarity with medical terminology used within healthcare environments
- Experience with aseptic techniques and infection control standards
- Ability to perform catheterisation procedures when required
- Basic life support (BLS) certification is advantageous
- Experience working with paediatric patients is beneficial but not essential
- Strong organisational skills with attention to detail in documentation and specimen handling
- Excellent communication skills, demonstrating empathy and professionalism when interacting with patients of all ages
