Vice President Of Finance

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Vice President of Finance to lead the company's financial operations and serve as a key member of the leadership team. The successful candidate will have the potential to transition into the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) role within approximately 1–3 years, depending on experience, performance, and demonstrated leadership capabilities.

The company is an established, successful, and growing organization in the steel and precast concrete erection industry. Its primary office is located in Massachusetts, where most of its business is conducted, with additional operations in Florida.

This is an onsite position and relocation is provided for the hired person if not currently in New England.

This is a senior financial leadership position responsible for overseeing the company's accounting and financial functions, including financial reporting, construction accounting, union payroll, job costing, WIP reporting, cash-flow management, tax and compliance matters, bonding and surety relationships, and internal financial controls.

The VP of Finance will play an important role in helping the company manage continued growth while ensuring strong financial discipline, accurate reporting, and effective financial planning.

Reporting & Key Working Relationships

The VP of Finance will:

·       Report directly to the CEO.

·       Directly manage the Controller and AP/AR Specialist.

·       Work closely with Project Managers to monitor job costs, WIP, project profitability, billing, and financial performance.

·       Work closely with the Director of Operations on operational planning, project performance, cash flow, and financial matters affecting the business.

·       Collaborate with company ownership and senior leadership on strategic financial decisions.

·       Work with external professionals and advisors as appropriate, including CPAs, accountants, financial advisors, insurance professionals, and surety/bonding partners.

Key Responsibilities1. Financial Management & Reporting

·       Direct and oversee all accounting and financial operations.

·       Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.

·       Oversee Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and percentage-of-completion accounting.

·       Manage construction job-cost accounting and project financial reporting.

·       Monitor project profitability, cost performance, and financial trends.

·       Prepare and review budgets, forecasts, and financial analyses.

·       Develop and maintain accurate cash-flow projections.

·       Maintain strong banking relationships and support the company's financing needs.

·       Ensure financial reporting is accurate, timely, and consistent with GAAP and applicable construction-accounting principles.

2. Construction & Project Finance

·       Oversee job costing and project-level financial reporting.

·       Work closely with Project Managers to understand project financial performance and identify potential cost overruns or profitability issues.

·       Review WIP schedules and percentage-of-completion calculations.

·       Monitor project billing, receivables, costs, and cash flow.

·       Help establish and maintain financial controls and reporting processes that support project management and operational decision-making.

·       Provide management with meaningful financial information to support business decisions.

3. Union Payroll & Compliance

·       Oversee payroll operations, including union payroll and fringe-benefit administration.

·       Ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll and related reporting.

·       Oversee certified payroll requirements.

·       Ensure compliance with applicable prevailing wage requirements.

·       Maintain appropriate payroll records and controls.

·       Coordinate with internal staff and outside resources regarding payroll, tax, benefit, and compliance matters.

4. Strategic Financial Planning

·       Partner with the CEO and senior leadership on the company's overall financial strategy.

·       Develop and maintain financial forecasts and long-term financial plans.

·       Provide analysis and recommendations regarding capital allocation and investment decisions.

·       Lead tax planning efforts in coordination with outside tax professionals.

·       Develop and manage the company's surety and bonding strategy.

·       Evaluate financial risks and opportunities associated with business growth.

·       Provide financial insight and recommendations to support strategic decision-making.

5. Banking, Surety & External Relationships

·       Maintain and strengthen relationships with banks and other financial institutions.

·       Serve as a key financial contact for the company's surety and bonding partners.

·       Coordinate with external CPAs, accountants, financial advisors, and other financial professionals.

·       Support annual audits, tax filings, insurance audits, and other external financial reviews.

·       Ensure the company is appropriately positioned from a financial and bonding perspective to support continued growth.

6. Leadership & Administration

·       Lead, supervise, and develop the accounting and finance team.

·       Directly manage the Controller and AP/AR Specialist.

·       Establish clear expectations, accountability, and performance standards within the finance department.

·       Enforce existing accounting and financial reporting policies and procedures.

·       Improve and modify policies and procedures as the business evolves.

·       Ensure the confidentiality, accuracy, and integrity of financial information.

·       Evaluate financial systems and recommend improvements where appropriate.

·       Oversee the effective use and continued development of Foundation Software and advanced Excel-based reporting tools.

·       Provide executive-level financial leadership and support to the CEO and other members of senior management.

Required Qualifications

·       10 years of professional work experience.

·       7 years of experience specifically within finance, accounting, or a related financial management function.

·       3 years of management or leadership experience.

·       Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial accounting principles.

·       Experience with construction accounting and/or project accounting strongly preferred.

·       Demonstrated experience with job costing and WIP reporting.

·       Experience overseeing payroll and fringe-benefit administration, preferably within a unionized organization.

·       Strong knowledge of certified payroll and prevailing wage requirements.

·       Experience with financial management software and advanced Microsoft Excel.

·       Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

·       Excellent organizational and communication skills.

·       Ability to work effectively with senior management, Project Managers, Operations, and outside professional advisors.

·       Ability to manage multiple priorities in a growing and changing business environment.

Preferred Qualifications

·       CPA designation preferred.

·       Previous experience in the steel erection, precast concrete, construction, or specialty contracting industry.

·       Experience working with union contractors and union benefit programs.

·       Experience working directly with banks, surety companies, and bonding requirements.

·       Experience preparing or overseeing percentage-of-completion accounting and WIP reporting.
