Manager - Underwriting
BASIC PURPOSE:
Provide leadership for underwriting staff for assigned distribution and/or market segments to achieve desired corporate underwriting profitability and growth objectives. Provide guidance with respect to risk selection and pricing. Effectively manage business processes related to new and renewal business and transactions around quoting, issuing, renewing, endorsing, canceling, and reinstating policies. Build effective relationships with assigned distribution and/or market segments contributing to profitability and growth. Hire, develop, train, and motivate underwriting staff. Annually, working with finance and others, develop profitability and growth objectives and associated staffing and budget plans during the planning process.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage and provide leadership to underwriting staff and guidance in matters of risk selection and pricing to select and to retain profitable business aligned with division and company objective.
- Resolve conflict with other departments in matters of coverage and underwriting intent.
- Manage, update, and communicate underwriting business processes around quote/proposal, policy insurance, and policy administration.
- Provide input related to products and pricing for assigned distribution and/or market segments.
- Actively participate with Commercial Markets Group to build effective relationships with assigned distributors.
- Collaborate with the Commercial Markets Group on the acquisition of new business and retention of existing business.
- Supervisor/manager responsibilities may include all of the following:
- Staffing needs, to include interviewing and onboarding for new employees.
- Training and development, as well as coaching and motivation, for staff.
- Performance management, goal setting, employee engagement, and salary administration.
- Workforce management to include unit equipment, software, and space needs, approving time off and overtime usage, and budget recommendations.
- Collaborate with underwriting leadership to establish department goals and objectives and participate in planning and budgeting of resources.
- Manage underwriting book of business within acceptable corporate risk appetite or tolerances within various geographies. Place reinsurance as appropriate for various lines of business and geographies in accordance with corporate risk appetite and tolerance statements.
- Develop personal leadership and management skills.
- Develop technical knowledge and underwriting expertise appropriate for assigned distribution and market segments. Provide input and direction into company underwriting philosophy and related guidelines and business processes.
- Participate/lead assigned projects and special research projects as necessary.
- Travel to visit brokers and insureds as necessary to assist in new or renewal presentations or foster business relationships. Participate in industry conferences on behalf of Church Mutual.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least 7-10 years of underwriting experience with proven record on in-depth knowledge of underwriting business.
- At least 5-7 years of proven record of favorable management experience.
- Bachelor's degree required.
- A combination of intermediate to complex account underwriting experience and industry specialized training will be considered in place of a bachelor's degree.
- A CPCU designation or evidence of continuing education in the insurance industry is highly desirable.
- Demonstrate knowledge and use of underwriting tools, such as, but not limited to, loss development, trending, large deductible products, and loss projections.
- Ability to foster and maintain excellent relationships with brokers, agents, and direct representatives.
- Proven ability to effectively manage people.
- Proven ability to creatively price large accounts.
- Knowledge of the underwriting function, insurance coverages, and rate making.
- Knowledge of religion practices, religious organizations, and senior living facilities.
- Proven ability to identify and analyze exposures, recognize areas of concern, and develop appropriate solutions.
- Strong judgment, decision-making, organizational, and negotiation skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively by enhancing information flow through active listening and sharing.
- Coaching skills to assist others to grow and attain their personal goals.
- Ability to deal with confrontation and work to a solid resolution.
- Ability to work with others in a team environment.
