Position Location

This position is located onsite at our offices in Huntsville, Alabama or Anchorage, Alaska.

Job Overview

The Manager of Risk Management and Insurance Programs leads the day-to-day administration, execution, and continuous improvement of CGS’s enterprise risk, commercial insurance, claims, and surety programs. The position supervises assigned staff and provides technical guidance to senior leadership and operational teams regarding risk identification, risk transfer, insurance compliance, loss prevention, claims management, and bonding requirements.

The Manager works collaboratively with Safety, Human Resources, Legal, Contracts, Finance, Business Development, and operational leadership to evaluate exposures, develop mitigation strategies, maintain appropriate insurance coverage, and support compliance with contractual and regulatory requirements. The position also serves as a primary liaison with insurance brokers, carriers, third-party administrators, surety providers, and other external partners.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Duties:

  • Lead the administration and continuous improvement of CGS risk management, commercial insurance, claims, and surety programs.
  • Supervise assigned risk management personnel, including establishing priorities, assigning work, providing technical guidance, evaluating performance, and supporting employee development.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to senior leadership, operational teams, and external partners on insurance, claims, surety, risk transfer, and loss-prevention matters.
  • Identify and evaluate organizational assets, operations, contractual obligations, and workforce exposures that may result in financial, operational, or reputational loss; recommend appropriate risk-control and risk-financing strategies.
  • Review solicitations, contracts, and subcontracts to identify insurance, indemnification, bonding, and other risk-transfer requirements. Coordinate significant legal or contractual concerns with Legal and Contracts personnel.
  • Manage domestic and international insurance programs, including policy placement, renewals, endorsements, certificates of insurance, evidence of coverage, notices of compliance, audits, and exposure reporting.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with insurance brokers, insurers, third-party administrators, claims specialists, and surety providers. Support coverage negotiations, renewal strategy, claim resolution, and service-performance reviews.
  • Oversee the reporting, investigation, documentation, administration, and resolution of claims, including workers’ compensation, automobile, property, general liability, and employment-practices claims.
  • Review claim trends, reserves, costs, and outcomes and work with internal and external claims professionals to reduce total cost of risk and achieve effective claim resolution.
  • Partner with the Corporate Safety Director, Human Resources, and operational leadership to develop and monitor loss-control, incident-reporting, post-incident management, training, and corrective-action programs.
  • Coordinate organizational insurance and risk-management support for emergency response activities, including remote-site medical transportation and medevac arrangements, in accordance with established emergency-response protocols.
  • Design, administer, and maintain the Risk Management Information System and related processes to support accurate exposure, policy, claims, incident, and financial reporting.
  • Partner with Business Development, Estimating, Contracts, and operational teams to assess insurance, bonding, and risk considerations associated with bids, proposals, and new business opportunities.
  • Administer the construction surety program, including bid, performance, payment, maintenance, and license bonds.
  • Coordinate bond requests and supporting documentation with sureties, brokers, Finance, Estimating, Contracts, Business Development, and operating companies.
  • Monitor bonding capacity, aggregate limits, indemnity obligations, outstanding bonds, and bond releases.
  • Support the allocation of insurance and risk-related costs to appropriate business units and provide Finance with accurate policy, premium, exposure, and claim information.
  • Review job duties and recommend appropriate workers’ compensation classifications in coordination with Human Resources, Payroll, brokers, insurers, and applicable rating authorities.
  • Prepare and submit accurate and timely insurance, claims, bonding, and exposure reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop, maintain, and recommend risk management and insurance policies, procedures, standards, and internal controls aligned with organizational objectives.

Job Requirements

Mandatory:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field such as business, finance, or risk management and seven (7) years’ of professional level experience in risk management, commercial insurance or related position.
  • Skilled in the use of MS Office Suite such as Word, Excel, and Outlook, as well as database programs and Risk Management Information Systems (RMIS) software at an intermediate level.
  • Ability to travel both domestically and internationally, as required.

Preferred:

  • Professional licensure or certification (specifically related to commercial insurance, adjusting or risk management) can be substituted for an additional one (1) year of relevant experience.
  • Experience in government contracting or corporate legal matters.
  • Understanding of ANSCA and issues involving Alaska Natives.

Working Conditions:

Work is typically sedentary in nature and performed in an office setting. The incumbent should be able to sit for extended periods of time, stand, walk, talk, hear, and write. Work hours are subject to change, with work over 40 hours per week, weekend and/or holiday work as necessary. Moderate travel may be required.

Physical Requirements:

The incumbent should also be able to use limbs and body members with a good range of motion. Occasional lifting, handling, or moving of objects without assistance weighing up to 35 pounds may be required.
