Primary Duties And Responsibilities

  • Drive CI Initiatives: Champion site-wide initiatives including 5S, 2 Second Lean, and Kaizen events to maintain a standardized and high-performance culture.
  • Process Optimization: Conduct time observation studies and utilize Value Stream Mapping (VSM) to identify bottlenecks in both OEM and Repair processes.
  • Rapid Prototyping: Design and fabricate shop aids, jigs, and fixtures (utilizing tools such as 3D printing or standard fabrication methods) to solve ergonomic or process issues.
  • Data Analysis: Analyze performance metrics to track the progress of improvement projects and generate actionable reports for leadership.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Engage directly with production supervisors, quality engineers, and shop floor operators to ensure processes are compliant with customer needs and safety standards.
  • Waste Elimination: Identify and execute solutions to eliminate the 8 forms of waste (DOWNTIME) in manufacturing processes.
  • Safety & Ergonomics: Support projects involving safety and ergonomic improvements to ensure a healthy work environment.

Qualifications

  • Education: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with everyone from shop floor operators to upper management.
  • Technical Proficiency: Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and Visio.
  • Language: Ability to read, write, and speak fluently in English.

Preferred Skills

  • Additive Manufacturing: Experience with 3D printing (FDM), including CAD design (NX/SolidWorks/Fusion 360), slicing software, and printer maintenance is highly desired.
  • Lean Exposure: Academic or practical exposure to Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma concepts (Green Belt is a plus).
  • Hands-On Aptitude: Comfort using basic hand and power tools (tape measure, drill, etc.) for rapid prototyping and shop floor improvements.
  • Data Experience: Previous experience with data collection and root cause analysis.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is based in an active repair shop environment. The intern will regularly be exposed to moving mechanical parts, large machinery, and moderate noise levels. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is strictly required when on the shop floor, including steel-toe shoes, safety glasses, and hearing protection.

Benefits & Learning Outcomes

  • Real-World Impact: Opportunity to manage your own projects and see your ideas implemented on the production line.
  • Mentorship: Work closely with experienced professionals in engineering, operations, and continuous improvement.
  • Technical Exposure: Gain deep, hands-on exposure to the airfoil and vane repair process, learning the intricacies of aerospace maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) from the ground up.
