Position Summary
The Patient Transport Trainer serves as a key member of the Patient Transport team, ensuring the safe, efficient, and compassionate transportation of patients throughout the hospital while supporting department training and operational excellence. This role is responsible for transporting patients, training and evaluating new employees, serving as a subject matter expert on department policies and procedures, and assisting leadership with departmental education initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
Patient Transportation & Support
- Safely transport patients via stretcher, wheelchair, beds, and specialized transport vehicles to and from patient care and clinical service areas.
- Assist clinical personnel with transferring patients to and from transport equipment.
- Perform Service Assistant I, II, and III responsibilities as assigned.
- Pick up and deliver clinical equipment, medications, paperwork, and specimens throughout the facility.
- Assist with the care, maintenance, and proper operation of departmental equipment.
- Support dispatch operations as needed to ensure efficient workflow and service delivery.
- Train new employees on:
- Patient transport procedures
- Safe equipment operation
- Equipment cleaning and disinfection
- Patient transfer techniques
- Customer service standards
- Communication and handoff procedures
- Train staff on specialized functions, including oxygen rounding, clinical/specimen rounding, physical therapy gym transports, procedural transports, and Labor & Delivery transports.
- Evaluate new hires using departmental training checklists and performance standards.
- Provide coaching, constructive feedback, and ongoing support to new employees.
- Communicate safety, performance, and service concerns to supervisors and training leadership in a timely manner.
- Assist in developing training materials, educational resources, and learning initiatives.
- Lead and participate in departmental training sessions, workshops, and competency assessments.
- Assist training specialists and managers with skills stations and educational programs.
- Promote a culture of safety by adhering to departmental and organizational safety standards.
- Report unsafe conditions, activities, hazards, or incidents promptly.
- Serve as a subject matter expert regarding departmental protocols, policies, and procedures.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all applicable privacy regulations.
- Attend required educational programs, in-service meetings, and departmental training sessions.
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of customer service experience.
- Ability to obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire.
- Strong communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to train, coach, and evaluate employee performance.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
- Previous healthcare, patient transport, or hospital operations experience.
- Experience training or mentoring staff.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered
- Knowledge of hospital departments and facility locations.
- Knowledge of proper body mechanics and safe patient handling techniques.
- Ability to teach and explain patient transport procedures and department policies.
- Ability to evaluate employee performance and provide constructive feedback.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, professionalism, and discretion.
- Ability to learn and operate departmental vehicles, including golf carts and Segways.
- Basic computer proficiency, including email, timekeeping systems, and web-based training applications.
- Ability to use smartphones and other technology for work assignments.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to maintain positive relationships with patients, visitors, and healthcare team members.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
- Ability to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- Commitment to excellent customer service and patient-centered care.
- Ability to stand and walk continuously throughout the shift.
- Frequent pushing and pulling of transport equipment, often involving considerable weight.
- Repetitive use of hands, wrists, fingers, and arms.
- Occasional bending, crouching, lifting, and lowering of equipment and supplies.
- Must successfully pass a back evaluation examination.
- Frequent handwashing and adherence to infection prevention protocols.
- Occasional exposure to cleaning and disinfecting agents.
- Potential exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and infectious diseases.
- Fast-paced healthcare environment requiring flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail.

This position has a starting rate of $18.57 per hour, regardless of prior experience. After six months of continuous employment, the hourly rate will automatically increase to $21.74 per hour. After one year of continuous employment, the hourly rate will automatically increase to $22.79 per hour.
This pay rate/range represents ChristianaCare’s good faith and reasonable estimate of compensation at the time of posting. The actual salary within this range offered to a successful candidate will depend on individual factors including without limitation skills, relevant experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
