Department : Office of the General Counsel

SUMMARY

Responsible administrative work planning, organizing, implementing and directing the activities of The First Church of Christ, Scientist (TFCCS) Risk Management Program. An individual in this position is responsible for the identification, evaluation of risk, and selection of methods to handle all risk exposures which could result in human, physical, or financial loss. This person will work closely with TFCCS' consultants, insurance representatives and staff in implementing new programs, upgrading existing programs and in formulating recommendations to management on rules and procedures. The position involves planning, organizing, coordinating and directing all insurance and safety programs for TFCCS. The position is also responsible for ensuring that an effective risk control program is maintained and that appropriate measures are taken to comply with TFCCS, OSHA, D.O.T., state and related safety regulations and directives.

The Risk Manager is expected to approach their essential duties and responsibilities with "wisdom, economy, and brotherly love" (Church Manual, p. 77), in addition to a spiritual conviction that, "The horse is prepared against the day of battle : but safety is of the LORD." (Proverbs 21 : 31)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop overall plan and programs that identify, measure and monitor all risk exposures.
  • Select and recommend appropriate risk management controls.
  • Complete and submit annual insurance applications and supplemental forms.
  • Coordinate activities involving property and casualty insurance, including but not limited to administering claim processing and maintaining communications with insurance adjuster / broker and TFCCS management.
  • Review of insurance policies and endorsements on an annual basis.
  • Develop and maintain business continuity plans for the enterprise and individual departments.
  • Maintain and monitor compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Manage and determine training needs and organize training to new employees and current staff as needed to educate departments on compliance requirements.
  • Report results of the overall program to the Board of Directors through the General Counsel.
  • Review of new and ongoing activities of TFCCS to determine insurance and risk control requirements.
  • Provide oversight of risk transfer program to determine minimum insurance needs for vendors and contractors.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education / Experience

Bachelor's degree with major course work in Risk Management, Insurance, or Business Administration supplemented by a minimum of eight to ten years of progressively responsible experience in risk management and claims. Relevant certification(s) (e.g., RIMS-CRMP) is helpful. At least two years must be in a managerial or supervisory role, or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and ability.

Knowledge / Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of the avoidance, reduction, retention and transfer of risk.
  • Thorough knowledge of common commercial insurance lines and relevant laws.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Workers' Compensation statutes and other federal and state laws related to personal injury, property damage, vehicle accidents and other risks.
  • Knowledge of Federal Occupational Safety and Health laws and standards.
  • Ability to analyze risks, exposures and loss expectancies and effectively associate these with risk management alternatives.
  • Considerable knowledge of management practices and administrative processes.
  • Ability to plan, assign and direct work of a subordinate employee engaged in various aspects of safety and claims handling.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative working relationships with management and coworkers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms.
  • Technology Skills

    Proficiency with Google Drive, Adobe Acrobat, and Microsoft Office is required.

    Work Environment

    This position works in the Boston office with an opportunity for a hybrid work schedule.

    Engagement with Christian Science

    Mother Church membership required. Primary class instruction preferred. Mental stamina and spiritual maturity are required of this position, as it deals daily with safety, occupational health, and security issues that demand the Christian Science perspective.
