Assistant/Associate Professor of Counseling - Western Seminary
 

Accountability:  VP of Academic Affairs and Chair of the Center for Personal and Spiritual Formation (Oversees the Counseling Program)

Start Date: On or after October 1, 2025 (open until filled)

Position Summary: Western Seminary invites applications for a faculty position beginning on or after October 1, 2025. The position will be in the CACREP accredited Master of Arts in Counseling degree program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.  Position involves teaching graduate level counseling courses, clinical supervision, commitment to student mentoring, advocacy, and scholarly activities. In addition, counseling faculty are expected to help promote greater awareness of Western and its counseling program through participation in outward-facing events and recruitment efforts.

Location: This position has the opportunity to be remote from certain states only or in-person from Portland. Remote requires travel at least 3 times per year.  This position is not open to remote work for those who reside in Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, or internationally.

Essential Duties/Functions:

  • Teaching Responsibilities: 20 credits/year; in-person, online, and intensive formats; supervision of practicum/internship. (Teaching-related activities represent approximately 75% of core faculty workload.)
  • Christian Faith Integration: Explicit integration of biblical worldview in teaching and spiritual formation, all in alignment with Western Seminary’s Faculty Teaching position.
  • Student Mentoring: Active involvement in student formation activities and be willing to invest themselves in the development of students and staff from a perspective of grace, love, and truth.
  • Curriculum & Program support: Active involvement in curriculum design, assessment, CACREP compliance.

Qualifications:

  • Education: CACREP Ph.D. in Counselor Education with a strong foundation of biblical studies, theology, and/or ministry experience.
  • Experience: Demonstrated teaching experience or potential, clinical supervision experience, eligibility as a state-licensed counselor, and substantive clinical experience.
  • Licensure/Professional Identity: Licensed as a Professional Counselor (LPC/LMHC or equivalent); demonstrated ongoing engagement with clinical practice and/or the field of counseling, broadly.
  • Character:  Candidates must have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and evidence a mature and growing Christian faith, be in agreement with Western Seminary’s Faculty Teaching Position (the Doctrinal Statement for Faculty), Western’s Standard of Character and Conduct, and be committed to the integration of biblical principles in instruction.
  • Experience with Tevera and program evaluation is preferred but not required.

Salary:  Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
