Part-time Nurse or Paramedic

Job Summary

The Part-Time School Nurse provides professional patient care and health services to Christchurch School students throughout the school week and during designated weekend hours. This position supports the physical health, safety, and well-being of students by providing assessment, treatment, medication administration, health education, illness and injury management, and appropriate follow-up.

The nurse works collaboratively with the Director of Health Services, residential faculty, administrators, athletic staff, counselors, faculty, families, and healthcare providers. The successful candidate will demonstrate sound clinical judgment, compassion, discretion, reliability, and the ability to work independently while maintaining strong communication with the broader Health Services team.

Regular weekend availability is an essential function of this position. The specific schedule will be established by the Director of Health Services based on the school calendar, student needs, residential programming, athletic activities, and Health Services coverage requirements.

Responsibilities

Student Health Care

• Provide nursing assessment and care to students presenting with illness, injury, or other health concerns.
• Evaluate student symptoms and determine appropriate treatment, monitoring, referral, or escalation of care.
• Provide first aid and patient care for minor injuries and illnesses.
• Recognize and respond to medical emergencies and activate emergency medical services when appropriate.
• Maintain familiarity with AED locations, emergency equipment, first-aid supplies, and relevant emergency protocols.
• Participate in emergency preparedness and response training as required.
• Coordinate referrals to physicians, urgent care facilities, emergency departments, and other healthcare providers as necessary.
• Monitor students who are ill or recovering from injury and provide appropriate follow-up.
• Provide age-appropriate health education and guidance to students.
• Support students with chronic health conditions, allergies, asthma, diabetes, and other established health needs in accordance with individual health plans and school protocols.
• Provide health support to both boarding and day students.
• Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential student health records.
• Communicate professionally and appropriately with students, parents/guardians, faculty, residential staff, administrators, and healthcare providers.
• Communicate significant or recurring student health concerns to the Director of Health Services.

Medication Administration and Management

• Administer prescription and over-the-counter medications in accordance with school policies, healthcare provider orders, and applicable laws and regulations.
• Maintain accurate medication administration records.
• Safeguard medications and follow established procedures for medication storage, security, documentation, and disposal.
• Monitor students for potential medication-related concerns.
• Communicate medication concerns and changes to the Director of Health Services and appropriate members of the Health Services team.
• Coordinate medication needs and follow-up between weekday and weekend coverage.

Additional Responsibilities

• Participate in required staff meetings, orientation, training, and professional development.
• Maintain current nursing licensure and required certifications.
• Stay current with practices related to adolescent health, emergency care, medication administration, and school nursing.
• Support the school's mission and Episcopal identity by contributing to a caring, respectful, and supportive student community.

Qualifications

• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN), or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), or Licensed Paramedic in the Commonwealth of Virginia (or ability to obtain)
• BSL certification (or willingness to obtain)
• At least two years of nursing or Paramedic experience preferably in a school, camp, emergency, or pediatric setting.
• Strong clinical assessment skills and ability to work independently
• Ability to work effectively with adolescents in a school environment
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Strong ability to collaborate effectively with others

Pay: $27.50 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 20.0 per week
