Part-Time Safety and Security Director for Christ Chapel Church

Position Summary:

Christ Chapel Church is seeking a dedicated and responsible individual to serve as a part-time Safety and Security Director for the church overall. This exempt position will be responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing safety and security protocols to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for our congregation, staff, students, and visitors. This role requires a proactive approach to risk management, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to coordinate with both internal teams and external partners, including local law enforcement. This position reports to the Christ Chapel Business Administrator. This position coordinates with Christ Chapel Academy security and safety personnel as appropriate. Position is responsible for maintaining order, preventing crime, investigating violations of church and school policies, detaining individuals violating the law or policies on church and school property or at on-campus sponsored events. Position assists the administrative staff with enforcing policies and procedures for a safe and orderly environment. The schedule for this position will include approximately 15-18 hours per week on campus, with presence on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Maintain secure premises, including church/academy facilities and associated property grounds
  • Prevent incidents to the extent possible
  • Coordinate emergency responses in a calm manner
  • Support daily operations and activities
  • Identify and coordinate mitigation of potential hazards
  • Ensure safety compliance of local and governmental regulations
  • Provide for facility preparedness from a security perspective
  • Conduct security training, e.g., first-aid, emergency drills, etc
  • Coordinate/implement evacuation and lockdown procedures as needed
  • Maintain and coordinate comprehensive safety and security policies and procedures for all church and academy facilities and activities.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and identify potential safety and security vulnerabilities.
  • Coordinate and supervise security personnel, including off-duty police officers as well as volunteer security team members, providing a security presence. This includes scheduling, briefing, and debriefing officers, and ensuring their effective integration into the church's overall safety plan.
  • Serve as the overall point of contact for safety and security matters, within the church, academy, and external agencies.
  • Develop and deliver safety and security training programs for staff, volunteers, and congregation members, including emergency procedures, de-escalation techniques, and active threat response.
  • Respond to and manage security incidents, emergencies, and medical situations in accordance with established protocols, including coordinating with emergency medical services and law enforcement as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of security-related activities, incidents, and training, and prepare regular reports for church leadership.
  • Collaborate with church leadership staff, ministry teams, and the Christ Chapel Academy, as required, to integrate safety and security considerations into all operations and events, including special events and outreach activities.
  • Interface effectively with local law enforcement, fire departments, and other emergency responders, and other safety and security-related vendors as a representative of Christ Chapel Church.
  • Manage and maintain security equipment, including surveillance systems, access control, communication devices, and other related technology.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations and legal requirements, including local ordinances and state and federal laws.
  • Review and update safety and security plans regularly to adapt to changing needs, best practices, and emerging threats.
  • Perform other security and safety related duties as assigned by church leadership.
  • Patrol and monitor the campus, grounds and parking lots to deter, detect, report and stop violations of the law and/or church policies.
  • Detect, investigate and report unauthorized or suspicious persons, vehicles and activities.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in safety and security management, preferably in a non-profit, educational, or community-based setting.
  • Strong understanding of security principles, risk assessment methodologies, and emergency response procedures.
  • Keen observational skills
  • Understand child protection and welfare policies
  • Have/obtain basic first-aid certification
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make critical decisions in stressful situations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Must pass a background check and adhere to the church code of conduct, and employee handbook.
  • Must possess a high school diploma (or equivalency) with some experience or training in a security related field or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the noted knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Must possess knowledge of, and the ability to apply, standard security procedures and best practices.
  • Must possess the ability to acquire knowledge of church policies and procedures. Security experience in a church setting is preferred.
  • Must possess the ability to read, write, speak and understand standard English.
  • Must have basic computer skills using Microsoft Office programs (word processing, email, etc.). Completion of college-level courses in the area of security, psychology, emergency management, or criminal justice preferred.
  • Must possess excellent human relations skills. Must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license with positive DMV points.
  • Must have the ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, key a two-way radio microphone, operate a keyboard, and use a lock and key; hear and understand speech at normal levels; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly; articulate information in an emergency situation; use physical agility and strength to defend self and detain persons using force if prudent and necessary; and have the visual acuity necessary to observe and comprehend personnel movement.
  • Law enforcement experience is a plus.

Schedule:

  • The schedule for this position will include approximately 15-18 hours per week on campus, with presence on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings as feasible.
  • Requires flexibility to work additional hours as needed for special events or emergencies.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $20,000.00 - $25,000.00 per year
