Director of Property & Casualty Insurance – Heavy Commercial Lines
Job Summary
The Director of Property & Casualty – Heavy Commercial Lines provides strategic leadership and oversight of the agency’s commercial insurance operations, with a focus on complex, high-risk, and middle-to-large market accounts. This role drives profitable growth, ensures technical excellence in coverage design and risk placement, and leads the commercial team to deliver superior client outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Growth
- Develop and execute growth strategies for complex commercial lines including construction, manufacturing, transportation, real estate, and specialty risks.
- Drive profitable growth while managing loss ratios, carrier capacity, and underwriting performance.
- Analyze market trends, coverage gaps, and emerging risks to expand service offerings.
- Partner with executive leadership on long-term commercial lines strategy.
Sales & Business Development
- Support producers on large, complex new business opportunities and renewals.
- Participate in prospecting, presentations, and executive-level client meetings.
- Structure and negotiate complex insurance programs, including layered placements and alternative risk solutions.
- Lead cross-selling efforts with benefits, risk management, and specialty lines.
Technical Expertise & Risk Management
- Oversee coverage design, policy structure, and placement for complex commercial accounts.
- Provide technical guidance on manuscript endorsements, contractual risk transfer, certificates of insurance, and claims trends.
- Ensure appropriate use of captives, self-insured retentions, and excess programs when applicable.
- Review and approve high-exposure accounts and non-standard placements.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop commercial producers, account managers, and service teams.
- Establish technical training programs and best practices.
- Participate in hiring and performance management.
- Promote accountability, collaboration, and technical excellence.
Carrier & Market Management
- Maintain senior-level relationships with commercial carriers, wholesalers, and specialty markets.
- Negotiate carrier agreements, underwriting authority, and commission structures.
- Monitor carrier appetites, capacity, and performance metrics.
- Serve as primary escalation point for underwriting or placement challenges.
Operations, Compliance & E&O Oversight
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and carrier requirements.
- Implement processes to mitigate E&O exposure on complex risks.
- Oversee documentation, audits, and renewal timelines for large accounts.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Risk Management, or related field (preferred).
- 10–15 years of heavy commercial P&C insurance experience.
- Proven leadership experience in commercial lines.
- Active P&C license (required).
- Advanced designations such as CPCU, ARM, CIC, CRM (strongly preferred).
- Deep technical knowledge of commercial coverage forms, risk management, and underwriting.
