Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the Health Officer, provides education to community groups, schools, and human service agencies about evidence-based tobacco policies to decrease youth initiation and increase tobacco dependence treatment, commercial tobacco-free spaces, and health equity by working with populations who are the most negatively affected by tobacco use disparities. Carries out the workplan for the MDHHS Tobacco Control program and works towards prevention specialist certification.
Employment Qualifications:
Education: Minimum of a High School Diploma; some college courses in health education or substance use disorder prevention preferred; must hold certification as a SUD Prevention Specialist or have the ability to become certified within 18 months of employment.
Experience: One year in a health promotion/education capacity
Other Requirements: Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license and vehicular insurance. Position requires travel around Chippewa and other Counties; reliable transportation necessary. Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of public health education and planning, including methods of administration, community organization and interagency relations, various techniques used in health instruction and the appraisal and evaluation of the public health education. Considerable knowledge of the current social and economic problems pertaining to public health. Ability to collect and interpret demographic and bio-statistical data. Ability to exercise good judgment in appraising problems and making decisions. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports. Ability to work effectively with the public and other employees.

Essential Job Functions
1. Meets with program consultants, provides reports on progress, responds to requests, and follows plan outline. Assists other community-based health prevention programs in coordinating community awareness activities.
2. Participates in community awareness and prevention events, assists in individualized activities among the organizational members.
3. Presents tobacco prevention model policies and services to professional organizations, service clubs, medical leadership, and business groups.
4. Provides tobacco vendor education to locations selling tobacco products to ensure compliance
with the law regarding sales of tobacco products.
5. Prepares, selects and distributes health education materials.
6. Assists in preparation of annual reports.
7. Participates in community-based coalitions.
8. All other duties as assigned.

Professionally addresses others (smile, handshake, eye contact, voice, posture, grammar, grooming and dress). Responsible for promoting and securing potential clients and referrals.
