What are the responsibilities and job description for the Postdoctoral Associate position at CHIP Lab – Computational & Heterogeneous Integrated Photonics?
The CHIP Lab at the University of Florida is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to work on mid-infrared semiconductor laser technologies, with a focus on VCSEL-style devices based on interband cascade laser (ICL) structures. This is a full-time, on-site research position involving both device fabrication and experimental characterization. The successful candidate will participate in the design, fabrication, and testing of mid-IR laser devices, including cleanroom processing, optical and electrical characterization, and performance optimization. The role also includes numerical modeling and simulation using tools such as FIMMWAVE or similar platforms to guide design and interpret experimental results. The postdoc will work closely with graduate and undergraduate students and collaborate with academic, national-lab, and industry partners on integrated photonics projects.
This position is initially for one year, with the possibility of extension based on performance and availability of funding.
Required Qualifications
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related field
- Experience with semiconductor laser fabrication and characterization
- Familiarity with optical mode simulation tools (e.g., FIMMWAVE, FIMMPROP, or equivalent)
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment
- U.S. Person (U.S. citizen or permanent resident), due to funding requirements
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with mid-IR lasers, ICLs, VCSELs, or DBR-based devices
- Background in photonic integrated circuits or optoelectronic device modeling
- Interest in mentoring students and contributing to a collaborative lab environment
