Posted by Chilton International Consultants on behalf of Between Friends
Chilton International Consultants is assisting Between Friends, a Chicago-area nonprofit dedicated to preventing domestic violence and supporting survivors, in identifying prospective candidates for its volunteer Board of Directors.
Between Friends works to break the cycle of domestic violence through survivor-centered services, prevention education, advocacy, counseling, legal support, youth programming, and community-based training. The organization serves adults, teens, children, and families impacted by domestic violence, while also working to build safer, healthier, and more equitable relationships across the Chicago community.
Between Friends is seeking thoughtful, mission-driven leaders who are interested in contributing their professional expertise, judgment, networks, and time to support the organization’s continued growth and long-term impact.
The Board is especially interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:
Finance, accounting, audit, or budgeting; recruiting, talent, human resources, or organizational development; legal, compliance, governance, or risk management; nonprofit development, fundraising, donor relations, grant strategy, or community partnerships.
Prior nonprofit board service is welcome but not required. We're looking for candidates who are committed to our mission, demonstrate sound judgment, work collaboratively, and are willing to participate actively in the governance and advancement of the organization.
Board Member Responsibilities: Volunteer board members are expected to support Between Friends through active and informed participation in board governance. Responsibilities may include:
- Reviewing and approving organizational strategy, policies, budgets, and major initiatives.
- Participating in regular board meetings and committee work.
- Supporting the organization’s fundraising and development efforts, including donor engagement, event participation, sponsorship outreach, and network-building.
- Providing professional expertise in areas such as finance, legal, recruiting, governance, development, or nonprofit operations.
- Serving as an ambassador for Between Friends in the Chicago-area community.
- Helping strengthen the organization’s visibility, partnerships, and long-term sustainability.
- Maintaining confidentiality and exercising judgment with respect to sensitive matters.
- Supporting a respectful, trauma-informed, and mission-aligned board culture.
The role requires consistent engagement, preparation for meetings, and a willingness to contribute beyond attendance alone. Candidates should be prepared to participate meaningfully in board discussions, committee assignments, fundraising efforts, and strategic oversight.
Term and Location: Board members serve a two-year volunteer term. The next term will begin in the organization’s next fiscal year, starting July 2027. Candidates should be based in, or meaningfully connected to, the Chicago area and able to participate in board and committee activities. Between Friends is particularly interested in individuals who understand the Chicago nonprofit, civic, legal, business, philanthropic, or community landscape.
Important Note Regarding Compensation: This is an unpaid volunteer board position. Board members do not receive compensation for their service. The role is intended for individuals who are able and willing to contribute their time, expertise, and networks in support of Between Friends’ mission and governance.
Prospective board members must be able to pass a background check. Candidates should also be comfortable supporting an organization whose work involves domestic violence prevention, survivor support, advocacy, and services for individuals and families affected by abuse.
