Job Description

The Clinical Content Specialist plays a key role in the creation and governance of workflows and evidence-based tools within the Epic electronic health record that enhance patient care quality, safety, and efficiency. This is a role within the Digital Health Solutions team that is part of Clinical Informatics. The ideal candidate will have a clinical degree (eg RN), 5 years of healthcare experience, and be committed to improving pediatric health outcomes through optimizing the patient/family digital experience.


In this role, you will collaborate with clinical, operational, and technical stakeholders to drive the development and continuous improvement of clinical content aligned with organizational policies, regulatory standards, and best practices. You will ensure that clinical content - such as order sets and care pathways, documentation templates, population health tools, patient screeners and education materials, alerts and other clinical decision support tools - are both meaningful and impactful. In close partnership with clinical informatics and Epic analyst teams, you will help design and optimize the EHR to support clinicians at the point of care and improve the overall patient and family experience.


This position will lead work on ensuring that Children's National Hospital integrated care workflows with community/referring providers are robust and seamless. Tools used will include Epic Carelink Direct and Salesforce. The individual will also play a significant role in designing and managing the digital patient/family experience across care venues, with a focus on the inpatient and the ED.

Qualifications:

Minimum Education

  • Bachelors Degree in clinical or technology relevant area . (Required) 

Minimum Work Experience

  • At least 3 years of related work experience, such as project management, information technology, quality assurance, process improvement, education, or communications. (Required) 
  • At least 3 years of health care delivery, health care operations, public health, or health information technology work experience. Experience with Epic EHR advantageous.

  • Project Management: Strong project management skills, capable of handling multiple initiatives simultaneously, including overseeing successful and fast-paced implementations of enterprise software including the electronic health record (EHR). 
  • Technical: Strong expertise in health information technology, including electronic health records and related systems. Familiarity with cross-venue clinical workflows and health care operations, including revenue cycle, analytics, and other business processes. Knowledge of quality improvement and process improvement methodologies and health information and health care regulations and laws. Proficiency in user-centered design principles, human factors engineering, usability testing, and software development life cycle.

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • This position requires that the appropriate Epic certification be successfully obtained and maintained for the assigned area of responsibility within 6 weeks of completing training, if not obtained prior to hire. 180 Days (Required)

Functional Accountabilities

Clinical Content Management

  • Leads the development and maintenance of clinical content in the EHR in complex domains and across multiple service lines, such as order sets and care pathways, documentation templates, population health tools, patient screeners and education materials, alerts and other clinical decision support tools. Independently manages build and testing.
  • Drives strategic alignment of content with evidence-based clinical pathways, operational goals, and organizational strategy.
  • Ensures enterprise alignment in clinical content builds, participating in quality/safey, informatics, and governance forums.
  • Evaluates content performance and usage data to guide optimization efforts.
  • Supports and trains other clinical content specialists in Epic capabilities, workflow design, and informatics best practices.

System Build and Maintenance

  • Oversees full lifecycle of Epic implementation, upgrades, and special projects, ensuring readiness, communication, and impact mitigation.
  • Maintains detailed documentation and enforces content lifecycle practices, including archiving, audit, and downtime readiness.
  • Champions standardization, usability, and clinician experience in clinical system design.

Customer Service Excellence

  • Anticipates user needs through structured feedback collection, workflow analysis, and proactive rounding.
  • Provides expert-level support for escalated issues, coordinating with IS and Epic and third-party vendors as needed.
  • Leads change management efforts, ensuring adoption and effectiveness through strategic communication and engagement.

Organizational Support

  • Serves as a liaison to clinical, quality/safety, and IS leadership, leading working groups and governance for system decisions.
  • Plays a key role in innovation pilots and enterprise informatics strategy.
