Overview

Adolescence is a complicated time for young people as they transition from children to adults. The Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at Children's Mercy provides a place where adolescents ages 10 to 21 can meet with a specialist to address a wide range of physical and emotional issues that are unique to this age group.

Conditions typically seen in clinic:

We care for adolescents and young adults ages 10 to 21 who are dealing with any of the following medical issues:

    Guidance and care for reproductive and sexual health
    • Counseling, prevention, screening and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) for all people, including cervical cancer screening and the HPV vaccine for cancer prevention.
    • Comprehensive and emergency contraception care and guidance.
    • HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).
    • Gynecology care, including menstrual concerns and assistance with menstrual management.
    • Diagnosis and treatment of PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and metabolic syndrome.
    • Urology care, including screening for testicular cancer.
    • Guidance and care for sexual health.
  • Substance use
    • Alcohol use, including how to lower your risks and stop drinking alcohol.
    • Marijuana use, including how to lower your risk and quit using marijuana.
    • Suboxone treatment for opioid use disorders.
    • Smoking and nicotine cessation (how to quit smoking or vaping).
  • Mental and behavioral health
    • Mental health assessment and medication management of depression, anxiety and ADHD.
    • Behavioral concerns such as problems at school, school avoidance, and complex challenges at home.
    • Sleep problems such as sleeping too much or not enough, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.
    • Partnership with social workers for community mental health resources and support.
  • Nutrition, weight and eating
    • Disordered eating: If you know or highly suspect your child is struggling with disordered eating, please also consider the Eating Disorders Clinic.
    • Nutrition counseling and resources for healthy eating.
  • Dizziness, fainting & blood pressure problems
    • Dysautonomia (nervous system disorders)
    • POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome)
    • NMH (neurally mediated hypotension)
    • Chronic fatigue
    • Non-cardiac syncope/near syncope (fainting)
  • Overall health needs
    • Development and growth of adolescents (social, emotional, physical).
    • Complex and chronic disease during adolescence.
    • Acne and other skin concerns.
    • Guidance and counseling about adolescent health issues and healthy relationships.
    • Support from social workers for additional needs and connection to community resources.

Registered nurses provide illness management and health promotion for patients and families who require care. Registered staff nurses utilize the nursing process and knowledge of scientific principles to provide safe, high quality, comprehensive, and age appropriate nursing care for their assigned patients. Registered staff nurses provide patient and family education and advocate for their needs. Registered nurses coordinate patient care with nonprofessional personnel as necessary.

New employees must be willing to be vaccinated if found non-immune to measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) and chicken pox (varicella) and/or without evidence of tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccination since 2005. If you are selected for this position, you will be asked to supply your immunization records as proof of vaccination. If you and have any concerns about receiving these vaccines, medical and/or religious exemptions can be further discussed with Human Resources.

Responsibilities
  • Utilizes the nursing process to develop and implement a safe, high quality, comprehensive, and age-appropriate plan of care for the patient and family that promotes optimal patient outcomes.
  • Meets the educational needs of the patient and family and advocates for their needs.
  • Maintains an environment that is safe, comfortable, efficient, and family-centered.
  • Utilizes current research and evidence for practice to expand personal professional knowledge, enhance role performance, and improve nursing care quality.
Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree ADN Required.
    • Current employees hired before September 1, 2013 are grandfathered and permitted to continue in the direct care nursing role.
  • Bachelor's Degree BSN preferred for all nurses hired after September 1, 2013.
    • Nurses hired after this date without a BSN must complete their degree within 5 years of their hire date.
  • One of the following required upon hire:
    • Licensed RN - Kansas, Registered Nurse Multistate License Kansas
    • Licensed RN - MO, Registered Nurse Multistate License Missouri
    • RN Compact license for all states besides KS and MO
      • Employees must obtain Licensed RN - KS or MO multistate within 90 days of hires
  • Refer to Nursing and Advanced Practice Provider Licensure and Certification policy for required Life Support Certifications Required Upon Hire
  • Specialty Certification relevant to unit's patient population (determined by Nurse Manager/Director) Preferred Upon Hire

Starting Pay

Our pay ranges are market competitive. The pay range for this job begins at $32.00/hr, but your offer will be determined based on your education and experience.

Remote Work/Work from Home

This position is not eligible to work remotely, which means that the person hired will be required to work onsite at one of our Children's Mercy locations and may not work from home.
