Job Description
Provides shift operations oversight and support for Respiratory Department. Monitors Respiratory census, acuity, and workload and oversees staffing assignments. Provides clinical expertise and support. May act as a liaison between bedside Respiratory staff and patient families/guardians.
Experience
- 3 years of experience
- RRT and/or NPS credential
- Bachelor’s Degree
- 3 years’ experience; previous pediatric experience
- Graduation from an approved Diploma or associate degree program
- BLS certification required within 30 days of hire
- PALS certification required
- Current license in the state of Georgia as a Respiratory Care Professional
- Demonstrated expertise and knowledge in practice related to specialty
- Must possess excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills

- Provides support, problem solving, and policy and procedure interpretation and compliance during assigned shift. Responsible for staff assignments and monitoring Respiratory census, acuity, and workloads and making adjustments as needed.
- Demonstrates effective communication skills to ensure that team members understand key messages and strategy. Is sensitive to how message may be received and adjusts message accordingly.
- Has knowledge of hospital policies and procedures and seeks out appropriate resources for policy interpretation as needed.
- Rounds with Respiratory therapists at least 3 times per shift, monitors changing workloads, and adjusts assignments accordingly.
- Coordinates Respiratory staffing needs and leads decision-making with clinical leadership at all levels. Acts as the key decision maker for adjusting staffing up or down to meet patient workload needs.
- Demonstrates the ability to remain current on Respiratory workload throughout the shift.
- Attends daily census meetings and facilitates shift huddles and provides Daily Safety Engagement Call Report. May be requested to report on the call.
- Dialogue with physicians and attend unit rounds as deemed appropriate. Maintains professional demeanor and good rapport with multidisciplinary care team.
- Formalizes staffing assignments for incoming shift in collaboration with assistant managers and/or Resource therapist from each area.
- Assist with internal transports and delegates as needed. Assist staff and covers for staff during lunch as needed.
- Collaborates with unit Resource therapists to ensure that ventilators and equipment is set up and ready for use.
- Demonstrates a working knowledge of Code Pink, Code Red, Code White, and Code Green. Attends codes and lends support to Respiratory Therapists and others during code situations.
- Participates in cost containment measures, particularly related to judicious staffing.
- Supervises utilization of equipment and supplies, staffing on a shift to shift basis, and time management.
- Participates in and reports on the continuous assessment and improvement of quality of care and service provided.
- Answers questions within scope and seeks out resources as needed.
- Documents on shift management report tool.
- Supports learning to enhance professional growth and clinical expertise.
- Completes mandatory education, departmental competencies, and required in-services by due date and documents attendance on education record.
- Maintains certifications and licensures.
- Attends 75% or more staff meetings and reads minutes when unable to attend.
- Reads emails and responds to emails in a timely manner.
- May precept new supervisory or management staff. Fosters collegial relationships between team members, other departments, and medical staff members.
- Manage the day to day operations of the staff, including but not limited to: work assignments, task management, time tracking/management, and on-the-job training.
- Take an active role in coaching and mentoring the team to ensure continued employee growth and success both on the team and at the broader CHOA organization.
- Assist manager with employee performance evaluations and hiring decisions.
