Job Description Performs complex clinical laboratory procedures that require a high degree of independence and decision making for patients undergoing bone marrow/peripheral blood stem cell/umbilical cord blood transplantation. Performs quality assurance/quality control procedures, assists in acquisition of audit data, troubleshoots equipment deviations, liaises with blood and marrow transplant and clinical laboratory staff, and assists in clinical and research protocol implementation. Requires flexible work hours to conform to infrequent schedule, lengthy laboratory procedures, or delay in receipt of a product for processing until beyond normal working hours. Complies with all Food and Drug Administration rules and regulations for hematopoietic progenitor cell processing laboratories as part of good tissue practices as set forth in laboratory policy and procedure manuals.
Experience
5 years of experience in a laboratory or blood bank or 5 years of experience in medical laboratory research involving tissue culture or 2 years of experience in stem cell processing (preference given to individuals who have experience in either blood banking or stem cell processing)
Preferred Qualifications
Proficient in sterile technique
Knowledge of hematopoietic progenitor cell processing
Education
Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or related scientific or biomedical field
Certification Summary

Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills
Knowledge of computer-based software, e.g., Microsoft Word and Excel
Knowledge of clinical laboratory standard operating procedures
Able to work independently make decisions affecting transplant products within limitations of standard operating procedures
Job Responsibilities
Completes training manual indicating documented competency in all laboratory procedures within 6 months of employment.
Performs monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual quality assurance/quality control (and daily/weekly quality control when present).
Liaises with blood bank regarding transplant workflow patterns and pre-transplant sample acquisition.
Troubleshoot equipment deviations and laboratory test results discrepancies.
Maintains current inventory of supplies, including liquid nitrogen.
Assists blood and marrow transplant administrative staff with research laboratory specimen processing for shipment.
Coordinates receipt and dissemination of unrelated transplant samples and products with blood and marrow transplant staff.
Participates in weekly division intake blood and marrow transplant patient meeting.
Assists in acquisition of audit data.
Assists in clinical and research protocol implementation.
Performs other programmatic duties and development as appropriate.
