What are the responsibilities and job description for the Discovery Guide position at Children's Discovery Museum of the Golden Crescent?
Job Summary:
The Discovery Guide’s primary function is to engage guests (children and families) as they play and explore the museum to ensure a positive CDM experience. This role also supports front-of-house operations, including welcoming guests, processing admissions and retail transactions, and serving as a first point of contact for visitor questions and communication.
This is a non-exempt part-time position and is not eligible for benefits. Hours may vary week to week but are generally Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 AM–5:30 PM. Additional days may be required for training, staff meetings, planning, development, and preparation. Work is primarily performed at the museum facility, with occasional travel for community events or outreach programs.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Guest Engagement & Floor Experience
- Support playful learning and discovery through meaningful interactions with children and adults
- Ignite imaginations and promote the power of play through hands-on experiences
- Maintain strong knowledge of exhibits; anticipate and encourage questions to enhance guest experience
- Engage guests in a positive, welcoming, and educational manner throughout the museum
Welcome Desk & Guest Services
- Greet and check in guests, ensuring a welcoming and efficient arrival experience
- Process admissions, memberships, and retail transactions using point-of-sale systems
- Answer incoming phone calls and respond to general inquiries about museum hours, programs, events, and policies
- Provide clear, friendly, and accurate information to guests in person and over the phone
- Support membership sales and promote programs, events, and offerings
Operations & Facility Support
- Assist with opening and closing procedures
- Maintain cleanliness of exhibits, including cleaning, vacuuming, and sanitizing supplies
- Follow strict procedures for cleanliness, sanitization, and disinfection
- Support quality control and maintenance of exhibit areas in alignment with safety, security, and cleanliness standards
- Monitor exhibits for functionality and report missing or broken items to leadership
Programs & Events
- Support and provide information about museum activities, programs, and events
- Assist with birthday parties and special events as needed
Team Participation
- Attend and participate in daily opening meetings, department meetings, trainings, and other scheduled meetings
- Perform other duties as assigned

- Able to perform physical activities such as bending, moving, and lifting supplies
- Reliable, punctual, and calm under pressure
- Excellent communication skills
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma, or
- High school equivalent, or
- Currently enrolled in school.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to meet physical demands of job to include walking, standing, climbing, bending, kneeling and lifting / moving objects up to 25 pounds
