Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Health Service Coordinator and medical providers, the Medical Assistant supports the delivery of high-quality patient care within the School-Based Health Center by performing routine clinical, laboratory, and administrative duties during patient visits. This technical role assists providers with patient care, maintains accurate clinical documentation, supports daily clinic operations, and helps ensure patients receive timely, respectful, and confidential services in accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Patient Care & Clinical Support

  • Greet patients, observe their condition, and direct them to the appropriate medical provider in accordance with established patient screening guidelines.
  • Promptly notify the medical provider of acutely ill patients requiring immediate attention.
  • Obtain, assess, and accurately record patient vital signs in accordance with clinical protocols and patient treatment plans.
  • Perform venipuncture and routine office laboratory procedures, including urine dipstick testing, rapid strep testing, and pregnancy testing.
  • Perform or assist with irrigations, dressings, first aid, medication administration as directed, and other routine clinical procedures within the scope of the role.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and assist medical providers during patient visits, including preparing instruments, applying bandages, and handling specimens and cultures.
  • Demonstrate the ability to provide appropriate care to patients based on the age groups served within the School-Based Health Center.
  • Serve as a patient advocate by supporting patients throughout their visit and assisting with interpretation services when needed.

Clinic Operations & Administrative Support

  • Schedule patient appointments and maintain accurate medical records and clinical documentation.
  • Complete required medical forms, medical record documentation, and other clinic records accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Assist with clinic administrative functions, including billing support and reviewing patient encounters for completeness.
  • Maintain required logs, statistical reports, and other documentation in accordance with clinic and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain examination rooms by ensuring they are clean, organized, fully stocked, and equipped with necessary medical supplies.
  • Monitor medical supply inventory and submit purchase requests as needed to maintain clinic operations.

Patient Experience, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure patients, families, visitors, colleagues, and guests receive prompt, courteous, respectful, and confidential service at all times.
  • Maintain patient privacy and comply with all applicable confidentiality requirements, including HIPAA and organizational policies.
  • Follow established infection prevention, safety, and clinical procedures to support a safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Collaborate with medical providers and other members of the health care team to support efficient clinic operations and quality patient care.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program required.
  • Ability to perform routine clinical procedures, including obtaining vital signs, venipuncture, specimen collection, and basic laboratory testing.
  • Ability to accurately maintain medical records, complete required documentation, and support daily clinic operations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with children, adolescents, families, and individuals from diverse cultural, social, and economic backgrounds.
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant is preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

The incumbent is expected to work a schedule, whether in-person or hybrid, as determined by the department's needs to facilitate effective collaboration with the team.  This flexibility is essential for maintaining seamless communication, fostering teamwork, and ensuring the smooth operation of the department's processes.  The position's requirements are subject to periodic review and adjustment based on organizational needs and changes in work dynamics.
