What are the responsibilities and job description for the Milieu Counselor for Children's Therapeutic Program position at Child Guidance Center of Mid-Fairfield County?
Mid-Fairfield Community Care Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit mental health agency, is seeking a Bachelors Level milieu counselor (bilingual Spanish/English preferred) for their Prospects Extended Day Treatment (EDT) Program. Staff working in the EDT Program will receive training and certification in the following therapeutic models which are used regularly and are trained both off-site and on-site. These include: Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI), Therapeutic Drama, Project Joy, Medication Administration and Risking Connection.
The Milieu Counselor is part of an interdisciplinary team and is the direct day-to-day therapeutic link between the child, family, the school and their clinical/psychiatric team during a child’s treatment at Prospects. The Milieu Counselors have varying degrees of educational background and are highly skilled at behavioral management, facilitating therapeutic groups and developing appropriate child-centered activities. The milieu counselor role is to co-facilitate children's therapy groups, work 1:1 with children ages 5-18, transport children to and from program (van provided), and collaborate with parents, families and schools. The milieu counselor is offered weekly supervision by a clinical supervisor within Mid-Fairfield as well as weekly group supervision. The milieu counselor will be expected to communicate with families. Bilingual candidates will be expect to communicate with families who are Spanish-speaking only and provide interpretation to assist the families to communicate with other staff in the program who do not speak Spanish/English. This position is ideal for students in the mental health/social services field who are seeking to work and gain experience while they are in school.
COVID-19
Currently EDT staff are providing in-person services with some options for family sessions through Telehealth.
Overall Responsibilities:
- Facilitate groups and activities for clients in assigned room.
- Provide crisis intervention as clinically indicated.
- Implementation of the behavior modification/level system.
- Assist in providing transportation by riding in the van with the driver and addressing any issues. Will notify Program Manager and/or Director of any concerns.
- Monitor absences and with consultation with the Clinician; a plan for addressing these absences will be developed in a timely manner.
- Notify program staff, the school and family if a child is not in program within a half hour.
- Notify the Clinician and Program Manager/Director should a psychiatric or medical emergency occur, if a client discloses abuse, expresses suicidal/homicidal ideation or intent to elope.
- Complete incident reports documenting restraints, critical incidents or injuries within 24 hours and give to the Director for review.
- Attend and be prepared for individual and room supervision.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
