Duties
- Safely operate buses in accordance with traffic laws, vehicle codes, and transportation safety regulations.
- Assist passengers with boarding and disembarking, including providing wheelchair assistance and child or senior care as needed.
- Ensure passenger safety by enforcing behavior management policies and maintaining order onboard.
- Conduct pre-trip inspections to verify vehicle mechanical condition and readiness, including checking emergency stop procedures and mechanical knowledge.
- Respond promptly to traffic changes, detours, or emergencies using defensive driving techniques and emergency response procedures for transportation.
- Provide excellent customer service by communicating clearly with passengers in English or bilingual/multilingual capacities, addressing questions or concerns professionally.
- Follow school policy knowledge for student discipline when transporting children or students; adhere to all transportation safety regulations.
- Complete detailed reports on routes, incidents, or vehicle issues; maintain accurate records of daily operations.
- Assist with heavy lifting tasks such as loading supplies or equipment when necessary while following safety protocols.
Requirements
- Proven experience in bus driving, including school bus driving or transit bus operation; commercial driving license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements required.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, state and local commercial driving laws, and transportation safety regulations.
- Certification in first aid and CPR; familiarity with emergency response procedures for transportation is highly desirable.
- Strong communication skills in English; bilingual abilities are a plus for serving diverse communities.
- Experience working with children or seniors; childcare or senior care experience is beneficial for passenger assistance roles.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting tasks safely; mechanical knowledge is advantageous for vehicle inspections and troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated defensive driving skills; quick response to traffic changes; understanding of school policy knowledge and behavior management strategies.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; compliance with all vehicle operation standards including emergency stop procedures.
