High School Algebra I Tutor (Part-Time)

Location: Loudoun County, VA (Ashburn, VA)
Pay: Up to $35 per hour, based on experience and qualifications
Schedule: Flexible Part-Time (After School and/or Weekends)

About the Role

We are seeking a compassionate, engaging, and experienced High School Algebra I Tutor to work one-on-one with a student entering 9th grade. The student attends a traditional school, has an Individualized Education Program (IEP), and benefits from patient, structured, and individualized instruction.

This position is ideal for a certified teacher, special education professional, or experienced tutor who enjoys helping students build both academic skills and confidence. The primary goal is to prepare the student for success throughout Algebra I while ensuring mastery of the concepts needed to pass the Virginia Algebra I Standards of Learning (SOL) assessment.

Lessons should be interactive, encouraging, and adapted to the student's learning style, emphasizing understanding rather than memorization.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver individualized Algebra I tutoring sessions aligned with the Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) Algebra I curriculum
  • Prepare the student for the Virginia Algebra I SOL through targeted instruction and ongoing review
  • Present mathematical concepts using multiple teaching strategies, including visual models, real-world examples, games, and hands-on learning activities
  • Adapt instruction to support the student's IEP goals, learning pace, and attention needs
  • Build confidence while strengthening problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Monitor progress and provide regular updates to parents
  • Reinforce classroom instruction while previewing upcoming concepts to promote long-term success

Curriculum Focus

Instruction should cover the core concepts included in the LCPS Algebra I curriculum, including:

  • Linear equations and inequalities
  • Multi-step, compound, and absolute value equations
  • Graphing linear functions and writing equations in multiple forms
  • Slope, intercepts, and rate of change
  • Systems of linear equations
  • Polynomial operations
  • Radical expressions and simplifying radicals
  • Quadratic functions and equations
  • Exponential functions
  • Data analysis, statistics, and introductory probability
  • Mathematical reasoning and problem-solving strategies aligned with the Virginia SOL

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Education, Special Education, or a related field (or currently pursuing)
  • Experience teaching or tutoring Algebra I or high school mathematics
  • Experience working with students who have IEPs or diverse learning needs strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) and/or LCPS curriculum is highly desirable
  • Patient, encouraging, and able to explain complex concepts in multiple ways
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
