General Statement of Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Shelter Operations Manager, the Youth Service Specialist will provide for the basic needs of runaway, homeless, and otherwise at-risk youth ages 12 through 21 who voluntarily admit themselves into shelter. The overall safety and well-being of the youth in shelter is the number one goal of the Youth Service Specialist. In addition, the Youth Service Specialist will play an instrumental role in teaching and role modeling independent living skills using positive youth development philosophy.

Overview of Position:

This position is responsible for direct shift coverage, including the provision of supervision, crisis intervention, and appropriate modeling for at-risk youth in either of Gateway’s residential programs. Attendance at monthly staff meetings and the ability to provide emergency coverage of shift are additional expectations of the position.

Qualifications:

Must have the ability and desire to work well independently and as part of a team. Ideal candidate will demonstrate a high level of personal and professional integrity and trustworthiness. Possess a strong work ethic, ability to take initiative, and require minimal direction. Demonstrate passion for Gateway’s mission and an environment that promotes best practices and positive youth development.

1. A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent with college course work in Social Work, Psychology, or Social Services. At least two years college coursework is preferred.

2. Must receive documented training in crisis intervention with a minimum of two years working with at-risk youth.

3. Experience working in a child placing or child caring institution preferred

4. Ability to work cohesively with a diverse population and work team

5. Ability to be flexible and work overnights, weekends, and holidays

6. Self-initiator with ability to work with minimal supervision and oversight

7. Valid Driver’s License and insurance

Pay: $15.00 per hour
