SUMMARY:  The Secondary Health & Physical Education Teacher delivers standards-based instruction that promotes lifelong fitness, health literacy, and overall student wellness. This position creates a safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environment that supports the physical, social-emotional, and behavioral development of all students. The teacher uses data-informed practices, differentiated instruction, and meaningful student engagement strategies to foster skill development, personal responsibility, and healthy decision-making. This role collaborates with staff, families, and the community to support student success and integrates culturally relevant perspectives, including Native American values, into instruction where appropriate.

 

ABOUT CHIEF LESCHI SCHOOLS:  Formerly known as the Puyallup Tribal School, Chief Leschi Schools was founded in 1976 to address the high dropout rate of the youth of the Puyallup tribe. It is the largest of seven tribal schools in the state of Washington and one of approximately 200 tribal schools in the United States. It is also one of the largest tribal schools to be funded by the Bureau of Indian Education.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Plan and deliver standards-based instruction in secondary Health and Physical Education aligned with Washington State standards and SHAPE America national standards
  • Design and implement engaging lessons that promote lifelong fitness, health literacy, and overall student wellness
  • Establish a safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environment that supports student voice, belonging, and positive behavior
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with varying physical abilities, learning styles, and social-emotional needs
  • Assess student performance using a variety of formative and summative methods; use data to inform instruction and monitor student progress
  • Teach and model skills related to physical fitness, movement, teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal responsibility
  • Integrate health education topics such as nutrition, mental health, substance abuse prevention, and personal wellness into instruction
  • Communicate regularly with students, families, and staff regarding student progress and well-being
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, special education staff, and support personnel to meet student needs
  • Supervise students in locker rooms, gymnasiums, outdoor spaces, and during school-sponsored activities to ensure safety and appropriate behavior
  • Maintain equipment, facilities, and inventory in a safe and organized manner
  • Participate in school improvement efforts, professional development, and staff collaboration
  • Serve as a positive role model by promoting healthy lifestyle choices and respectful relationships
  • Incorporate culturally relevant practices and perspectives, including Native American values and traditions, into instruction where appropriate
  • Performs other duties as assigned by administrator

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Physical Education, Health Education, or a closely related field
  • Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with appropriate Health/Fitness endorsement(s)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of standards-based instruction and classroom management practices appropriate for secondary students
  • Basic proficiency in technology, including word processing, data entry, email, and instructional technology tools
  • Evidence of successful teaching experience or supervised practicum/student teaching in a secondary setting

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two or more years of successful secondary Health/Physical Education teaching experience
  • Demonstrated experience implementing standards-based PE curriculum (e.g., SHAPE America)
  • Experience promoting student wellness, including social-emotional learning and mental health awareness
  • Experience working with diverse student populations, including Native American students or other historically underserved communities
  • Training or experience in culturally responsive teaching practices
  • Coaching experience or willingness to support extracurricular athletic programs (if applicable)
  • Current CPR/First Aid/AED certification
  • National Board Certification or advanced degree in a related field

 

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Principles and best practices of standards-based Health and Physical Education instruction
  • Student development, including physical, social-emotional, and behavioral development in adolescents
  • Culturally responsive teaching practices and strategies for supporting diverse learners
  • Classroom and behavior management strategies that promote student engagement and safety
  • Assessment practices, including the use of data to guide instruction and improve student outcomes
  • Health education topics, including nutrition, mental health, and substance abuse prevention
  • School policies, procedures, and safety protocols related to physical education environments

  • Create a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment for all students
  • Effectively manage student behavior in active and dynamic settings (e.g., gym, field, locker room)
  • Deliver clear, engaging instruction that motivates students to participate and improve
  • Adapt instruction to meet a wide range of physical abilities and learning needs
  • Build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Collaborate as part of a multidisciplinary team to support student success
  • Integrate cultural relevance and community values into instruction
  • Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical standards
  • Organize and manage time, equipment, and instructional resources effectively
  • Promote lifelong fitness, wellness, and healthy decision-making among students

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and stand for long periods of time.  The employee must frequently reach with hands and arms and is regularly required to talk or hear; stand and/or walk; bend, stoop, twist, squat, and kneel; and use hands to finger, handle, feel and perform fine motor manipulations. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Anything over the weight limits should be done as a two-person lift or with a mechanical lift.
