JOB DESCRIPTION



JOB TITLE:   Assistant Principal

 

REPORTS TO:  Principal

 

UNIT CLASSIFICATION:  Certified Administrator

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

 

Assist the principal with management of the school consistent with district policies and administrative procedures.  In the absence of the principal assumes the principal’s responsibilities as defined by the current job description.  Work cooperatively with the principal, staff and students to develop appropriate program scheduling, and encourage extra-curricular participation.  Provide leadership and training within the instructional programs.  

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*:

  1. In the absence of the principal, assume the principal’s responsibilities as defined in the current job description.
  2. Work with parent, faculty and student groups in advancing educational activities and objectives.
  3. Assist the principal with the selection, evaluation and recommendations for staff/faculty assignments.
  4. Assist with the evaluation and supervision of staff performance.
  5. Assist with the compilation of requests for staffing and present recommendations concerning current and projected staffing needs and allocations to the Human Resources department
  6. Assist with staff development through coordinated inservice and coaching for the instructional staff.
  7. Assist with general supervision of students.
  8. Handle incidents dealing with matters of student discipline and administer district policy and procedure pertaining to conduct, discipline and rights and responsibilities.
  9. Assist in the supervision of the student attendance program and work with students having attendance problems.
  10. Assist with general supervision of co-curricular activities and special events including evening activities.
  11. Coordinate and supervise student safety and health services.
  12. Assist the principal in working with committees in such matters as (1) organization (2) instructional programs, (3) budget development and coordination, and (4) development of goals and yearly action plans.
  13. Assist with Special Education programs and issues at the building level.
  14. Serve on district level instructional and curriculum committees.
  15. Assist in maintaining a positive school climate.
  16. Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

 

  1. Implement strategies for improving teaching and learning including core, Title, LAP and Special Education programs.  Assist in developing a vision and establishing clear goals; providing direction in achieving stated goals; encouraging others to contribute to goal achievement; securing commitment to a course of action from individuals and groups.
  2. Seek and encourage the involvement of team members.  Modeling and encouraging the behaviors that move the group to task completion.  Supporting group accomplishment.
  3. Perceive the needs and concerns of others; dealing tactfully with others in emotionally stressful situations of conflict.  Knowing what information to communicate and to whom.  Relating to people of varying backgrounds.
  4. Reach logical conclusions and make high quality decisions based on available information.  Giving priority and caution to significant issues.  Seeking out relevant data, facts and impressions.  Analyzing and interpreting complex information.
  5. Assume responsibility.  Recognizing when a decision is required.  Taking prompt actions as issues emerge.  Resolving short-term issues while balancing them against long-term objectives.
  6. Plan and schedule one’s own and the work of others so that resources are used appropriately.  Practicing time and task management; knowing what to delegate and to whom.
  7. Communicate clearly.  Making clear oral presentations that are easy to understand.
  8. Express ideas clearly in writing; demonstrating technical proficiency.  Write appropriately for different audiences.
  9. Teach, coach and help others.  Providing candid and specific feedback based on observation and data.
  10. Understand personal strengths and weaknesses.  Taking responsibility for improvement by actively pursuing developmental activities striving for continuous learning.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects. 



QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major emphasis in educational administration
  • Washing State Principal certificate with appropriate endorsement
  • Washington State teaching certificate with minimum of three years of successful classroom teaching experience
  • Training and ability to utilize clinical supervision
  • Demonstrated abilities in leadership, program development, evaluation and effective human relations skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of curriculum alternatives
  • Successful experience and demonstrated interest in working with you and community

 

Licenses/Special Requirements

Valid Washington State Drivers license or photo identification.

Social Security Card.

WSP/FBI fingerprint/background clearance.
