JOB DESCRIPTION SECONDARY CLASSROOM TEACHER - AGRICULTURE Brief Description of Position As part of a secondary teaching assignment, teaches one or more classes of agriculture to students in grades 9-12 and assists in other school programs as assigned. Major Duties and Responsibilities 1. Teaches courses in vocational agriculture, agricultural sciences and/or agricultural mechanics utilizing courses of study approved by the Board of Education. 2. Instructs pupils in citizenship, basic communication skills and other general elements of the course of study common to all teachers, as specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district. 3. Develops lesson plans and appropriate instructional aids stressing the vocational aspect of agriculture. 4. Provides opportunities when needed for individual and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student. 5. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment. 6. Evaluates each student's progress in agricultural knowledge and skills and prepares progress reports. May prepare letters of recommendation for scholarships, college entrance, etc. 7. Maintains professional competence through participation in inservice education activities, professional growth activities and/or participation in the activities of the California Agriculture Teachers Association on a sectional, regional or state level. 8. Advises or assists the FFA chapter in his or her school. 9. Supervises student projects or work stations during the regular work year. 10. Supervises students' projects at fairs. 11. Makes home visits to each new student and discusses project possibilities. Other Duties and Responsibilities 1. Selects and requisitions books and instructional supplies and maintains required inventory records. 2. Communicates with parents regarding their child's needs in the field of agriculture. 3. Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems. 4. Performs basic attendance accounting and business services as required. Additional Duties and Responsibilities for the Instructor Assigned to Supervise Occupational Experiences During the Summer Months 1. Advises or assists the FFA chapter in the school. 2. Supervises student occupation projects or work stations on a 12-month basis. 3. Supervises students' projects at fairs. 4. Conducts home visits to evaluate student projects. Supervision Exercised or Received Under the immediate direction of the site administrator/designee. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Qualifications 1. Credential-Any valid credential issued by the State of California to perform the services of a teacher in the subject area in grades 9-12. 2. Education-Bachelor's degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements; major or minor in subject area preferred. 3. Personal Qualities-Appearance, grooming, and personality which establish a desirable example for students. Ability to meet District standards for physical and mental health. Better than average recommendations from student teaching supervisors or other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic attainment, and classroom performance of the teacher. Skill and dexterity in working with tools, materials, and machinery. Goals of Effective Performance To develop in each pupil an insight and understanding of agriculture and its place in our society; to discover and develop talents of pupils in agricultural fields; to develop practical problem-solving skills related to processes in agriculture; to develop in each pupil skill in the safe use of tools and machinery; to establish good relationships with parents, potential employers of pupils, and other staff members.
