As a full-time Animal Care Technician, you must be willing to work up to 40 hours a week. Must be available to work weekends and partial days on rotating holidays as determined by schedule and department requirements.
The Animal Care Technician will be responsible for the daily care, feeding and general welfare of the animals in the shelter. This position will also be responsible for the general daily cleaning and maintenance of the animal shelter building and property. The Animal Care Technician will be directly responsible for the overall health and safety issues within the shelter.

This employee reports to and receives general direction from the Animal Control Supervisor and a Chickasha Police Department Lieutenant and/or Sergeant.

Duties are performed under general supervision in accordance with established standards, policies, regulations, city ordinances, and state statutes. This work may occasionally involve safety hazards and strenuous physical activity and occasionally involves the exercise of initiative and independent judgement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

  • Enforce City ordinances and State statutes regarding safety and environmental aspects of the animals and the animal shelter;
  • Maintain the shelter on a daily basis;
  • Work with the city’s adoption program;
  • Insure proper care for all animals at the City’s animal shelter;
  • Interacts with veterinarians, vendors, rescue organizations, volunteers, complainants, community service offenders, animal’s owners, and the general public in a professional manner;
  • Evaluate and assist with the euthanizing and disposing of any and all deceased animals;
  • Deal with a wide variety of animals, domestic and wild;
  • Maintain close contact with the City’s contract veterinarian regarding the care of injured and/or impounded animals;
  • Do any and all other functions that may be required by the Animal Control Supervisor and Lieutenant/Sergeant or other appropriate supervisors;
  • Regular attendance at work during normal business hours.
  • This position also requires you to act in the capacity of an administrative assistant to the Animal Shelter Supervisor. Other duties will include answering phones, taking messages, scheduling veterinarian appointments, assisting with Spay and Neuter clinics, public events, supply pick-ups, small animal transports, and other duties not defined in this section.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge equivalent of high school diploma and such training and/or experience as would provide the applicant with the below referenced knowledge, skills, and abilities;
  • Knowledge of animal behavior characteristics;
  • Working knowledge of the methods, techniques, and procedures to care for an impounded domestic and wild animals;
  • General knowledge of City ordinances and State Statutes pertaining to health, safety, and environmental aspects of animals;
  • Basic knowledge of the geography of the City;
  • Ability to apply tact and diplomacy in the relationships with animal owners, complainants, and the general public in the application of kennel responsibilities;
  • Ability to interpret and explain laws and regulations;
  • Physical ability to lift over 25 pounds on a regular basis and 50 pounds on occasion.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to use office equipment including entering information into a computer;
  • Must possess a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License and be insurable.
  • This classification is a “safety sensitive” position as defined by the United States Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulations, the Oklahoma Standards for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Act and/or Oklahoma Medical Marijuana laws. As a “safety sensitive” classification, you will be subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing. Marijuana is one of the substances included in the drug panel screening. Possession of a medical marijuana license will not excuse you from the testing process, or the consequences of testing positive for marijuana.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Some exposure to unpleasant weather and requires continuous attention to safe working and operating procedures to ensure the safety of oneself and fellow citizens;
  • Must have the visual acuity to identify problems and detect danger;
  • Must possess the aural acuity to understand conversation in quiet and noisy environments and understand radio transmissions;
  • Speech and hearing required to effectively transmit information via the radio, over the phone, and in person;
  • Must have the physical ability to climb stairs and ladders to make proper animal capture and mobility to crawl under low objects;
  • Exposed to animal bites, stressful situations, and offensive smells;
  • Also physically able to restrain animals which are occasionally non-compliant.
  • Must have strength to lift, pull and push 75 pounds on a frequent basis and larger weights on occasion;
  • Stamina to exert self throughout the day in all weather conditions.

SUPERVISION:

The Animal Care Technician reports to the Animal Control Supervisor and a Chickasha Police Department Lieutenant or Sergeant.
