Job Title: Housing Coordinator

Department: Hockey Operations

Location: Chicago / Blackhawks Ice Center (In-Office/Hybrid in Chicago as needed)

Status: Independent Contractor

Compensation: This is a Contract/1099 role. The selected candidate will work as an independent contractor and will receive a flat monthly rate of $500.

Role Summary:

The successful candidate will lead the Steel’s efforts to recruit and vet billet families for its players with a 30-minute radius of Blackhawks Ice Center. This individual should be familiar with the sport of hockey and the billeting tradition, possess excellent interpersonal skills to serve as the liaison between the club, host families and players, and be extremely organized.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Actively recruit billet families to ensure a safe environment for all players. This includes building relationships with local youth hockey associations, presentations to prospective housing families, phone screenings, in-home visits and other communication.
  • Execute pre-season and post-season surveys for players and billets in order to create the best possible matches between player and host family, considering family/player lifestyles, pets, transportation and other factors.
  • Assist in the creation and review of the team’s housing handbook for players and billets.
  • Ensure compliance among billet families of USA Hockey and USHL policies including background checks, US Center for SafeSport and other items.
  • Coordinate temporary billet housing for affiliate players and recruits.
  • Communicate regularly with the team’s General Manager and coaching staff, addressing any housing issues or conflicts immediately.
  • Assist in the organization and execution of events for parents and billets such as the team’s annual Mom’s Trip and Parents Weekend.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Flexible schedule for evening and weekend in-home visits or presentations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Creative thinker and problem-solver
  • Prior housing experience (billeting, foreign exchange student, etc.) is a plus

Since the inaugural 2000-2001 season, nearly 400 Chicago Steel players have played Division I hockey, and 63 Steel alumni have been selected in the NHL draft, including seven first-round selections.
