Warehousing & Logistics Services within the Facilities Department is responsible for offering logistical services by providing every school with the necessary printed material, furniture, and equipment to ensure that every educational opportunity is available to CPS students and faculty.


Job Summary:

Reporting to the Warehouse Lead, the Motor Truck Driver is responsible for operating a variety of motor trucks and automotive equipment. They perform the physical process of transporting mail, supplies, furniture, and equipment. This is a full-time, non-exempt position that will be paid for time worked on an hourly basis


The Motor Truck Driver will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

  • Drive commercial vehicles to transport materials, furniture, and equipment on assigned routes and to district-approved sites

  • Load and unload materials and supplies to ensure that cargo complies with the service requests

  • Verify delivery of items with the client by obtaining valid written authorization from a school representative

  • Inspect vehicles or mechanical equipment for proper operation, including checking oils and fluids

  • Report extensive mechanical repairs to supervisor to ensure repairs are made in a timely manner

  • Complete various paperwork, including worksheets, repair orders, activity logs, and other forms documenting driving assignments

  • Conduct safety checks to ensure assigned vehicles and equipment are in proper working order

  • Shuttle equipment to and from facilities for preventative maintenance work

  • Document and report all discrepancies identified in the field to their supervisor(s)

  • Make proactive recommendations and present solutions to management to improve quality and work efficiency

  • Act as a team leader or primary point of contact for on-site furniture removal assignments, as necessary or assigned. Act proactively to ensure smooth team operations and effective collaboration.

  • Other duties as assigned


In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Motor Truck Driver must possess the following qualifications:

Education Required:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent is required

Experience Required:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of motor truck driving experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience is required

  • Minimum of two (2) years of previous experience working in a team environment (e.g., cooperating with co-workers, joint problem solving, etc.) is required

  • Previous experience operating powered warehouse industrial equipment (i.e., forklift, pallet jacks, stock pickers, etc.) is required

  • A valid State of Illinois Class "A" or “B” Commercial Driver's License, with no restrictions on CDL limiting the operation of equipment, is required.

  • A valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required for positions driving a tractor/trailer or 20-ton truck

  • Possession of a valid State of Illinois Class “A” or “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with an H or X endorsement is preferred

  • A minimum of two (2) years of previous experience in a distribution center or warehouse is preferred

  • A valid OSHA-compliant Forklift Certification License is preferred

Other Requirements:

  • Heavy work: Exerting fifty (50) to one hundred (100) pounds of force occasionally, or twenty-five (25) to fifty (50) pounds of force frequently, or ten (10) to twenty (20) pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demands include the ability to sit, stand, and walk frequently and for extended periods of time; ability to move one's hands and arms to grasp or manipulate objects; and ability to operate a personal computer and related equipment
  • Flexibility in hours and work location is a requirement
  • Must be willing and able to work overtime as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills (speaking, listening, and writing) with the ability to communicate well with internal partners, vendors, and management

  • Ability to follow safe warehouse working practices, as instructed

  • Ability to efficiently work independently of direct supervision within the warehouse

  • Proficiency in Google applications(Sheets, Docs, etc.) and Microsoft applications (Excel, Word, etc.)

  • Moderate knowledge of automobile components, systems, and parts and their proper operation; automotive equipment and materials; applicable safety and code standards specific to the operation and maintenance of trucks and heavy equipment, including OSHA standards

  • Some knowledge of applicable communications equipment and devices; geographical locations within the City of Chicago; knowledge and compliance with applicable District and department policies, procedures, Board rules, and regulations

  • Active Learning: Give full attention to what other people are saying, take time to understand the points being made, ask questions as appropriate, and not interrupt at inappropriate times

  • Operation and Control: Control operations of equipment or systems

  • Operation Monitoring: Watch gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly

  • Reason to Solve Problems: Apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense

  • Recognize Spatial Orientation: Know one’s location within the environment or where other objects are concerning oneself

  • Demonstrate energy and stamina to accomplish work tasks timely

  • Strong interpersonal skills: Be pleasant with others on the job and display a good-natured, cooperative attitude

  • Demonstrate reliability, responsibility, and dependability and fulfill obligations

  • Strong attention to detail and thoroughness when completing work tasks

Working Conditions:

  • Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance

  • Exposure to extreme indoor and outdoor weather conditions

  • Warehouse or storage facility work environment. Exposure to loud noise, fumes, or dust

  • Working around moving machinery and heavy equipment


Equipment:

  • Standard office equipment (e.g., telephone, photocopier, fax machine, calculator)

  • Computer and peripheral equipment (e.g., personal computer, computer terminals, hand-held computer)

  • Personal protective equipment (e.g., steel-toe boot or equivalent, glasses, gloves, vest, pads)

  • Forklift and electric pallet rider

  • Communication equipment (e.g., two-way radio, dispatch equipment)

Conditions of Employment

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:

  • Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency - Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district. The Chicago residency requirement does not apply to temporary/part-time positions, however, all CPS employees must be residents of Illinois.
