POSITION:OT/ Hand Therapist
RESPONSIBLE TO: Physicians
JOB SUMMARY: Uses advanced knowledge and experience in the rehabilitation of the upper extremity, including the shoulder girdle, elbow, wrist and hand. Uses specialized evaluation, assessment, planning and treatment skills, to provide therapeutic interventions to restore function and prevent dysfunction of the upper extremity to help return an individual to their highest level of performance.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Master’s degree for occupational therapist
- Doctoral degree for physical therapist
- Current licensure or certification maintained
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Graduate of an accredited school for occupational or physical therapy
- Certified hand therapist preferred or on career track for certification
- Must have 3 years experience in post-operative cases, sports related injuries and overuse syndromes
- Excellent communication skills and motivational skills to help patients overcome their hand related problems
- Experience communicating and interacting with physicians
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Performs skilled evaluations and ongoing assessment of each patient of all diagnosis relative to the upper extremity
- Performs post-operative, preventative and non-operative treatments according to established hand therapy standards and department policies and procedures
- Establishes individualized treatment goals defined by the patient’s capacity and tolerance
- Measures performance and outcomes to ensure comprehensive care for patients
- Fabricates custom orthoses for the upper extremity
- Demonstrates the ability to respond to a changing workload in a positive and professional manner
- Educates patient, family, significant others and other medical personnel
- Extensively documents patient progress in an EMR system, in a timely manner, according to payer guidelines
- Works with the referring physician and patient to ensure a continuum of care
- Attends all regular staff meetings and participates in projects within the department and facility
- Attends required continuing education courses and meetings to keep up with the latest medical and surgical advances, ensure continued competence and maintain appropriate licensure
- Attends annual CPR, OSHA and other training programs as required
Typical Physical Demands
Hand therapist are required to sit or stand for long periods of time. The position requires full range of body motion including handling patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. May spend time stooping, kneeling, bending and crouching. Normal visual acuity and hearing are required.
Typical Working Conditions
Employees will have frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances and other conditions common to a clinical environment.
