Chicago Doors and Closets | Morton Grove, IL
Pay: $28.00–$33.00 per hour
Job Type: Full-time, W-2 Employee
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–3:30 PM
Location: Morton Grove, IL and surrounding Chicago North/Northwest suburbs
Job Description
Chicago Doors and Closets is looking for an experienced, dependable carpenter to join our in-house residential installation team.
We specialize in interior door replacement and closet systems for homeowners throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Our installation process is designed around efficiency, precision, and completing most projects in a single day.
This is not a framing or general construction position. We're looking for someone who is comfortable working inside customers' homes, has strong carpentry skills, works quickly and efficiently, and takes pride in delivering a professional installation experience.
Most of our work involves installing prefinished interior doors and related hardware. We handle much of the door preparation and painting before arriving at the customer's home, allowing our installers to focus on efficient, high-quality installations.
We provide steady, year-round work, a company vehicle, tools, and benefits.
What You'll Be Doing
- Install residential interior doors, including slab replacements, prehung doors, bifold doors, bypass doors, and other specialty door systems.
- Remove existing doors and prepare openings for new installations.
- Install and adjust hinges, handles, locks, tracks, stops, and related hardware.
- Perform minor carpentry work, including jamb adjustments, casing installation, and modifications to door openings when needed.
- Load, unload, carry, and position heavy doors, including solid-core doors.
- Work efficiently to complete multiple door installations per day while maintaining quality standards.
- Protect customers' floors, walls, furniture, and surrounding areas during installation.
- Communicate professionally with homeowners, explain installation details, and address customer questions.
- Keep jobsites clean, organized, and presentable throughout the workday.
- Identify installation issues and communicate them promptly to the project manager.
- Maintain company tools, equipment, and vehicles.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for an experienced carpenter who is fast, dependable, physically capable, and professional with customers.
The ideal candidate has:
- At least 3 years of hands-on carpentry or residential installation experience.
- Experience installing doors, windows, cabinets, trim, or similar residential products.
- Strong measuring, cutting, leveling, and general carpentry skills.
- Experience using power tools, saws, drills, and installation equipment.
- The ability to work at a fast, consistent pace without sacrificing workmanship.
- The physical ability to regularly lift, carry, and maneuver heavy solid-core doors, with team assistance or lifting equipment when appropriate.
- Strong communication skills and a professional appearance when working in customers' homes.
- The ability to work independently and solve problems in the field.
- A valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
Residential customer-facing experience is strongly preferred.
We are not looking for someone whose experience is limited exclusively to rough framing or commercial construction with no experience working directly with homeowners.
What Makes This Job Different
Unlike traditional remodeling or finish carpentry positions, our installations are highly organized and repeatable.
- Most doors arrive at the jobsite already cut, prepared, and painted.
- The majority of projects involve door installation rather than extensive onsite fabrication.
- Most installations are completed in one day.
- You'll work with a dedicated in-house team rather than as a subcontractor.
- We provide a consistent schedule and year-round work.
- Our focus is on efficiency, quality, and customer satisfaction.
We value installers who can maintain a productive pace and complete jobs correctly the first time.
Compensation and Benefits
- $28–$33 per hour, based on experience and ability.
- Full-time, year-round employment.
- Consistent Monday–Friday schedule.
- Company-provided vehicle and fuel for work-related travel.
- Company-provided tools and equipment.
- Company-paid health insurance through our HMO plan, subject to eligibility.
- Paid time off.
- Company shirts and work apparel.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
This is an active, hands-on installation position involving work inside occupied residential homes and condominiums.
Candidates must be comfortable with:
- Regularly lifting, carrying, and maneuvering heavy doors and materials.
- Standing, bending, kneeling, and working on their feet throughout the day.
- Carrying materials through hallways, stairways, and residential buildings.
- Working carefully around finished walls, flooring, and furniture.
- Communicating directly with customers in a courteous and professional manner.
- Maintaining a productive installation pace throughout the workday.
