What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research Scientist position at Chi Square Analytics?
Research Scientist – $140,000 - $250,000 depending on experience – Toronto, Canada / New York, United States (Hybrid)
A rapidly scaling technology company working at the forefront of artificial intelligence and interactive systems is looking to appoint a Research Scientist to support its expanding research function.
The organisation is focused on advancing AI capabilities through novel, game-based environments, using large-scale interaction data to improve how models learn, reason and perform in real-world contexts. Backed by leading investors and collaborating with top academic institutions, the business is building a distinctive platform that combines applied research with live, user-driven systems.
This position offers the opportunity to contribute directly to cutting-edge research initiatives, working on large-scale models and helping translate experimental insights into measurable performance improvements.
Role
This role will involve contributing to the design and execution of research focused on improving large language models through interactive and game-based training approaches.
Working as part of a highly technical team, you will take a hands-on role in developing experimental frameworks, implementing algorithms, and analysing results across large-scale systems. The position is well suited to someone who enjoys combining rigorous research with practical application in a fast-moving environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the design and execution of research experiments exploring how interactive environments enhance model capabilities
- Develop and refine reinforcement learning environments and training workflows
- Implement and evaluate algorithms across areas such as agent-based systems, model training, and multi-step interactions
- Work with large-scale datasets (260B parameter model), including game-generated data, to improve model performance across both pre-training and post-training stages
- Contribute to experiments on high-parameter models, delivering clear and measurable outcomes
- Collaborate with academic partners on joint research initiatives and publications
- Present findings internally and externally, supporting ongoing research partnerships
Key Skills
- Strong academic or applied research background in machine learning, computer science, or a related discipline
- Experience in areas such as reinforcement learning, multi-agent systems, or large language model development
- Proven ability to implement research ideas in practice, with strong programming skills (e.g. Python and frameworks such as PyTorch or JAX)
- Track record of contributing to research publications or complex technical projects
- Interest in the intersection of games, simulation environments, and artificial intelligence
- Comfortable working within an early-stage, high-growth environment
Desirable:
- Experience within leading AI research environments or top-tier academic institutions
- Exposure to large-scale model training (including pre-training or fine-tuning workflows)
- Familiarity with alignment techniques, reward modelling, or human-in-the-loop approaches
- Experience working with interactive or game-based systems
Benefits
- Competitive base salary with a broad range reflective of experience, plus equity participation
- Flexible working options across key locations, with remote flexibility for exceptional candidates
- Opportunity to collaborate with globally recognised academic institutions
- Involvement in cutting-edge research with real-world application at scale
- Strong potential for development within a growing and well-funded organisation
This is an opportunity to contribute to research that directly shapes how advanced AI systems learn and evolve in real-world settings.
