Finance Director – Nonprofit Accounting & Grants | Eagle Butte, SD

Organization: Cheyenne River Youth Project (CRYP) Type: Full-Time | Permanent | Exempt | Salaried with Benefits Reports To: Deputy Director Location: Eagle Butte, SD (housing assistance available)

Own the Financial Engine of a Mission-Driven Organization

The Cheyenne River Youth Project has served Lakota youth and families for more than 35 years — running after-school programs, teen internships, arts institutes, family services, and social enterprises across two full-service youth centers. None of that happens without strong financial leadership.

We're looking for a Finance Director to serve as the backbone of our financial operations. This is a senior role with real scope: you'll oversee accounting, payroll, grants administration, compliance, HR functions, and a small finance team — while partnering directly with the Deputy Director and CEO on budgeting and long-term sustainability.

If you're a detail-oriented financial professional who wants your expertise to fuel something meaningful, this is the role for you.

What You'll Do

Financial Operations

  • Manage all accounting functions using QuickBooks: accounts payable, deposits, invoicing, payroll, reconciliations, and purchase orders
  • Balance check registers and ensure accurate, timely processing of all financial transactions
  • Oversee social enterprise financial systems including daily closeouts, catering bids, collections, and reconciliations
  • Prepare quarterly and annual account reconciliations; monitor tax and financial reporting compliance; support cash flow forecasting

Budgeting & Reporting

  • Lead annual budget development in collaboration with all departments
  • Facilitate weekly budget meetings with staff covering active grants, funder requirements, spending reviews, and amendment planning
  • Prepare and distribute monthly financial reports, funder reports, investment summaries, and cash flow statements for leadership and the Board of Directors
  • Analyze financial trends and organizational health; advise the Deputy Director and CEO on financial decisions and strategic planning

Grants & Donor Management

  • Maintain complete documentation and archival of all funding awards
  • Support grant proposals with budget development, financial documentation, and proposal review
  • Track donations and ensure timely donor acknowledgment
  • Manage direct mail database and bulk mailings in coordination with the Communications Director

Human Resources & Compliance

  • Maintain personnel records, administer the timekeeping system, process payroll, and file payroll taxes
  • Track staff hours for grant reporting purposes
  • Administer employee benefits orientation including 401(k), health, dental, and supplemental insurance
  • Manage organizational insurance coverage: general liability, auto, property, workers' compensation, and employee coverage
  • Conduct State and Tribal background checks and drug testing for new hires; maintain and secure employee files

Audit & Internal Controls

  • Coordinate annual audits, compilations, and desk audits with independent auditors and financial consultants
  • Develop and review financial policies, procedures, and system controls
  • Supervise and support the development of finance department staff

Additional Responsibilities

  • Manage CRYP's Family Services program in coordination with finance and programming staff
  • Maintain the facilities and building rental calendar
  • Track and record volunteer hours; engage donors as needed

What We're Looking For

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, nonprofit financial management, or a related field
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks, spreadsheets, and data management systems
  • Experience managing, forecasting, and reporting on organizational finances
  • Knowledge of financial compliance and regulatory requirements
  • Experience preparing financial statements, identifying trends, and producing quarterly/annual reports
  • Valid South Dakota driver's license (or ability to obtain one)
  • Must pass background check and drug screening

Preferred

  • 5 years of nonprofit finance and grants management experience
  • Knowledge of governmental accounting methods
  • Experience with personnel management
  • Familiarity with American Indian communities
  • First Aid / Safety certification (or willingness to be trained)

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: Commensurate with experience
  • Health Insurance: CRYP covers 75% of single-coverage premiums
  • Retirement: 401(k) with 3% employer match
  • Dental: Optional coverage via payroll deduction
  • Supplemental Insurance: Access to AFLAC and Colonial Life
  • Paid Time Off: Accrues with tenure; includes personal and sick leave
  • Holidays: Indigenous holiday schedule with floating days
  • Professional Development: Funding available
  • Relocation & Housing: Assistance available depending on situation
