The Coordinator is responsible for the integration of the Laboratory billing processes between the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and the Hospital Information System providing accurate information, timely billing and proper account management standards. Provides accurate, hassle-free billing to outreach clients, patients, and third-party payors ensuring complete and accurate information is present.

- Designs and maintains Lab billing and coding processes and procedures, incorporating established Patient Financial Service (PFS) policies as needed. Ensures accurate charges with timely and efficient turn around for maximum client and patient satisfaction.
- Acts as a resource in laboratory billing practices for Lab employees, other hospital departments and our customers.
- Interprets insurance program procedures and regulations for submission of claims, adhering to laboratory program compliance requirements for all federal and state agencies, including Medicare and Medicaid.
- Troubleshoots Lab claims; proactively identifies and rectifies problems.
- Responsible for integrity and compliance with applicable policies and procedures. Consistently reviews, processes and assesses accuracy of those policies and procedures to ensure regulatory standards are maintained within the relevant information systems. Accountable for ethical, legal and professional responsibilities related to PFS and lab practices.
- Ensures information systems function efficiently within an integrated delivery system to meet the needs of all Lab customers. Coordinates file definition and designs processed for efficient billing systems across departments.
- Updates and maintains client fee schedule and special pricing based on client contracts and changing test fees.
- Researches new and existing clinical laboratory tests. Ensures CPT and acceptable alternative codes are correctly assigned to each test build. Implements billing protocols based on individual pricing, tiers, and cost of service.
- Generates laboratory and financial reports as needed.
- Resolves Lab billing issues in a courteous and effective manner to maximize client satisfaction.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Proficient MS Office, Outlook and Internet Explorer skills
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to demonstrates an independent work initiative, sound judgment and attention to detail
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Knowledge of clinical laboratory tests
- Knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and provider NPI codes
- Ability to interact respectfully with diverse cultural and socio-economic populations
- Education (must meet all of one of the following):
- Associate's degree or higher
- High School Diploma (or Equivalent Certificate from an accredited program) and two (2) or more years of job-related experience
- One (1) or more years of clinical laboratory experience
- 1 Year (must have one of the following within one (1) year of start date):
- Current Medical Billing or Coding certification from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
- Current Medical Billing or Coding certification from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)
- Associate’s degree or higher
- Laboratory client/clinic billing experience
- Previous medical billing and/or terminology experience
