REPORTS TO: Executive Director

POSITION SUMMARY

The essential functions of the job for the Activity Director require, and may be amended from time to time at the sole discretion of Viva Senior Living, to include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Comply with standards of business conduct in accordance with federal, state, and local health and regulatory standards and guidelines, as applicable.
  • Must possess, at a minimum, an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Recreation Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, Human Services, Gerontology, Recreation Management, or a related field is preferred.

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in long-term care, assisted living, rehabilitation, senior services, or a related healthcare setting is preferred. Experience planning and implementing recreational, therapeutic, or social programming for older adults is strongly preferred.
  • Must be able to work well with peers in a congenial work environment and, above all, maintain the utmost compassion and dignity for residents while adhering to the Resident Bill of Rights.
  • In exigent circumstances, the employee may be subject to call back during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, temporary staffing shortages, etc.).
  • Must adhere to Viva Senior Living's attendance policies and follow the terms and conditions of employment as set forth in the Employee Handbook.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Must maintain the highest standards in caring for and servicing the needs of residents and their family members and loved ones.
  • Must adhere to all facility policies and procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Create an engaging, active, and home-like atmosphere while planning, organizing, and implementing activities for residents in accordance with Viva Senior Living's philosophy to maximize resident adjustment, healthy lifestyles, and resident social satisfaction.
  • Provide direction and oversight to the entire Activities Department.
  • Plan, schedule, organize, direct, and conduct a variety of activities for residents and their visiting family members or friends.
  • Plan trips outside of the community to meet the various needs of residents.
  • Uphold resident morale by offering adequate and diversified recreational activities and ensuring appropriate supervision for each activity.
  • Reach out to residents who are confined to their rooms and develop individualized engagement opportunities.
  • Arrange visits from clergy (Priest, Rabbi, Minister, or other spiritual leaders) to support residents' spiritual well-being.
  • Coordinate monthly birthday celebrations honoring residents.
  • Assist with parties, activities, and decorations for holidays throughout the year, ensuring appropriate staffing and resident participation.
  • Inform residents of upcoming activities by creating and distributing monthly activity calendars, posting notices on community bulletin boards, creating flyers for special events, uploading calendars and events to the community website, and posting calendars to the Viva Intranet.
  • Communicate activities and events to all staff to encourage resident participation and coordinate transportation assistance as needed.
  • Upon admission of new residents, assist with Resident Lifestyle Survey (RLS) interviews to gather information regarding interests, background, hobbies, and routines. Ensure surveys remain current and accessible to staff.
  • Facilitate small-group and one-on-one programming for residents who benefit from individualized engagement.
  • Lead and oversee exercise and wellness programming to ensure Viva Senior Living standards for physical wellness are maintained.
  • Coordinate and facilitate Resident Council meetings to provide residents with a voice in community operations and quality of life.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of all activities, attendance, resident participation, and resident feedback to support individualized programming and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain current information regarding community services, resources, programs, and educational materials available to residents, families, and staff.
  • Implement and maintain a Welcome Event for new residents to ease the transition into the community and encourage social engagement.
  • Understand and manage the department budget while ensuring expenditures remain within approved limits.
  • Develop, write, and publish the community newsletter, including new resident introductions, resident spotlights, event highlights, birthdays, recipes, community updates, and other engaging content.
  • Supervise scheduling and transportation of residents to community outings, group activities, appointments, and houses of worship. Assist residents on and off the community bus as needed.
  • Supervise Activities staff and bus driver(s), providing coaching, guidance, performance oversight, and clear communication of expectations.
  • Demonstrate creativity and flexibility by adapting programming to meet the changing interests, abilities, and needs of residents.
  • Perform all other duties deemed appropriate or assigned by the Executive Director.
  • Other duties may be required in accordance with state regulations.
  • Must adhere to scheduled shifts assigned by the Executive Director or Supervisor.

ANNUAL HEALTH REQUIREMENTS
  • Must provide annual verification of a negative TB skin test or other testing as required by state regulations.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

(With or Without the Aid of Mechanical Devices)

  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must be able to see and hear, or use prosthetic devices that enable these senses to function adequately.
  • Must meet the general health requirements established by facility policy, including required medical and physical examinations.
  • Must be able to relate to and work effectively with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and occasionally agitated residents.
  • Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a height of at least 5 feet and carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet.
  • May be required to assist with the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
