What are the responsibilities and job description for the Endoscopy Technician position at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center?
The Endoscopy Technician is responsible for providing direct patient care while assisting Endoscopy staff and physicians in the performance of endoscopy procedures. The Endoscopy Technician provides individualized patient care to patients of all ages, from adolescent to geriatric, based on the established standards of the hospital and the Endoscopy department.
These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.
Safely transport patients using a stretcher
Perform vital sign testing, i.e. T.P.R., B.P., pSO2, oxygen therapy, discontinuing IVs , and perform weights as directed; have documented data reviewed by the RN
Remain certified in CPR and initiate basic definitive care or life support measures as needed under the supervision of the RN
Follow all infection control guidelines, including proper hand washing practices prior to and after patient care; demonstrate competency in infection control and aseptic technique while performing scrub functions in the Operating Room or Endoscopy
Perform isolation techniques according to policy and procedure
Thoroughly clean equipment and stretchers prior to return to the storage area and between patient use
Utilize the proper cleaning and rinsing agents relative to type of cleanup required; follow correct procedures for manual cleaning of instruments
Prepare specimens and transport to the lab
Help keep room/area clean, well-stocked, and organized; restock inventory as needed to maintain par levels
Send instruments, tools , and equipment needed for repair to the appropriate departmenl/personnel, and ensure the entire process is documented (i.e. send out date, condition of equipment, return date, etc.); inspect returned equipment for proper function
Maintain supply levels in the decontamination room Maintain the temperature log of the refrigerator
In the computer, enter charges, specimens, supply requisitions, and maintenance requests as needed
Assist in patient prep for PEG insertion and procedure set up
Utilize Endoscopy policies and procedures to assist Endoscopy personnel and physicians during cases under the direction of the physician
o Responsibilities may include: holding/advancing scope, operating forceps/snares, preparing room for case, cleaning room between cases, assisting in restocking, and positioning/supporting the patient during procedures
Utilize the following equipment in an accurate and competent manner: BICAP (Bipolar Cautery), Electrocautery (Bovie and ERBE Monopolar Cautery), and Argon Gas Plasma Coagulator/Generator
Assist in therapeutic and diagnostic procedures independently, while under the direction of the RN, using equipment according to established guidelines
o Procedures include, but are not limited to: ERCP, EGO, EUS, EBUS, ENB, colonoscopy, and bronchoscopy; polypectomy and biopsy; achalasia dilation; Maloney, Savary, and balloon dilations; thoracentesis and paracentesis; motility studies; capsule endoscopy, wireless and catheter Ph monitoring studies, variceal banding; clipping; colon decompression; stent placement,HET, hemorrhoidal banding, and PEG insertions
Reprocesses and maintains equipment according to standards of infection control, policies/ procedures and manufacturer instructions.
Participates in quality improvement activities as directed.
Take call rotation

Provide high quality work by demonstrating professionalism, accuracy, and thoroughness, and ensure all documentation is legible and complete
Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in- seNices
Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care

Minimum Required Education: High school diploma or equivalent Preferred Education: GTS, AGTS preferred
Experience: 6 months as an OR/Endoscopy Assistant or CST with experience in aseptic practices, blood borne pathogens, precautions, and safety practices
BLS Certification within 90 days of hire. CFER certification is preferred at time of hire, but must be obtained within 24 months of employment.
