SUPERVISOR OF SCHOOL PLANTS - SAFETY AND MAINTENANCE

Department: School Plants

Pay Grade: U123

FLSA Status: Exempt

This position inspects workplaces for adherence to regulations on occupational safety and inspects building, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing equipment for completion of scheduled maintenance and contracted activities. Work is performed under general supervision.

  • Plans, organizes, directs, and assists in supervising various trades; maintains records and files.
  • Communicates with individual school administrators regarding special projects, emergency situations, and budget requirements.
  • Solicits prices for goods and services when needed.
  • Develops and reviews bid specifications, scope of work, and cost estimates as they apply to School Plants' needs, and assists in the evaluation of bids as required.
  • Inspects contracted work for compliance with the specifications and assists in processing payment.
  • Communicates and schedules meetings with contractors to rectify problems.
  • Inspects workplace environments, equipment, and practices to ensure compliance with safety standards and government regulations (OSHA).
  • Establishes, evaluates and enforces programs on workplace safety and health.
  • Prepares written reports on findings and violations. Participates in remedial and/or disciplinary action as needed.
  • Educates employees about safety practices through daily communication, jobsite safety meetings, and regular training programs.
  • Inspects and demonstrates correct use of tools and safety equipment.
  • Assists with accident reporting procedures and communications with the Department of Risk Management.
  • Performs inspections for projects, work orders, and general work performed. Inspects contracted maintenance services for completion and quality of work.
  • Maintains log of inspections, project progress, and notes quality of work performed.
  • Works as a part of the School Plant administrative team to confer with Leadsmen, report deficiencies, resolve problems and monitor corrective actions.
  • Inspects newly installed equipment for compliance and adherence to plans and specifications.
  • Maintains construction files, tracking warranties for projects, and keeping all items up-to-date.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelors degree in construction or safety related field.
  • Computer proficiency is required, including Google Workspace, Word, and Excel. Experience with work order systems (HxGN EAM) is preferred.
  • Five to seven years of experience in occupational safety and health regulations and building, mechanical, and plumbing equipment maintenance, repair, and inspection; OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
  • Possession of OSHA 10- or 30-hour General Industry Safety and Health certification; or ability to obtain certification within six months of employment.
  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the School Board.
  • Thorough knowledge of the basic principles and methods of building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and energy, as applied to the maintenance and repair of large buildings and related facilities.
  • General knowledge of the basic design of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, with an understanding of basic building construction and architecture.
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational safety and health regulations and general industry standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret sketches, drawings, architectural and engineering plans and/or specifications.
  • Ability to prepare specifications and cost estimates.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to estimate needed materials and time required for various jobs.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, establish and maintain working relationships with contractors, school personnel, and associates.
  • The work environment is both inside and outside; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
  • This is light work requiring the exertion of 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, and some medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, preparing or analyzing written or computer data, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.

Pay: $44.99 - $74.64 per hour
