Cherry Lake Publishing Group/Sleeping Bear Press seeks an experienced Graphic Designer.
Are you the type of graphic designer who wanders into a bookstore’s children’s section to admire the beautifully designed picture books? Do you notice their title type designs and stunning illustrations? Do you wonder what it would be like to create the book you hold in your hands? CLPG/Sleeping Bear Press imprint seeks an experienced and talented graphic designer with a passion for and interest in children’s book publishing to join our team as we create books that enrich the lives of children and develop lifelong readers. We are looking for experienced candidates with creativity and a desire to learn about the publishing industry. An illustration background is helpful but not a requirement; however, an understanding of how to visually communicate a story and the ability to guide an artist are essential.
This position is responsible for the design and production of books.
Additional Responsibilities and Requirements include:
· Conceptualize and execute the design of book interiors and covers.
· Working closely with Creative Director, illustrators and editors throughout the bookmaking process from development to printed books by providing design, project management, and creative supervision.
· Helping to establish and maintain Sleeping Bear Press/Cherry Lake Publishing aesthetic style and design standard.
· Adhering to schedules from design concept, to final files for production and digital archiving.
· Maintaining a current sense of design trends and familiarity with target audiences to understand consumer needs and preferences.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Expert MacIntosh Operating System user. - Expert in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and Adobe Acrobat.
· Complete mastery of InDesign text design tools and typography for complex in-house
page composition.
· Deadline oriented, ability to multitask and work under pressure.
· Excellent communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
· Expert knowledge of typography and typesetting.
· Expert design skills.
· Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
· Expert knowledge of four-color and black & white printing processes.
· Comprehensive design portfolio is required.
· Knowledge of and appreciation for book design, typography and children's book illustration.
· Possess a positive, team player attitude.
· A minimum of 5 years' experience in the graphic design field.
· Bachelor of Arts degree, design degree or equivalent preferred but not required.
