Location: Cherry Knoll Elementary School

 

General Summary:

The Special Education Assistant for medically fragile students provides assistance to Special Education/medically fragile students in the classroom.  He/she reports to the principal or teacher designated by the principal.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assists special education students with academics in regular education classroom.
  2. Assists special education students with their medical needs as necessary (tracheotomies, colostomies, etc.)
  3. Assists students in categorical classrooms.
  4. Assists with physical challenges (wheel-chairs, scribe, daily life skills, and communication devices).
  5. Adapts lessons and materials to fit needs of special education children.
  6. Assists special education students in physical education, music, art, at lunch and recess as needed.
  7. Takes part in planning meetings and IEPC’s.
  8. Maintains records and provides support for teachers.
  9. Teaches or leads small group instruction.
  10. Monitors behavior of students on behavior plans and others as needed under the direction of the special education teacher.
  11. Attends training or in-services.
  12. Accompanies special education students on field trips.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  1. Minimum education requirement is a high school diploma. Previous college credit, WorkKeys certification or college degree preferred. 
  2. Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students and school      
  3. Medical certification such as LPN, RN, etc., preferred.
  4. Previous experience working with children.
  5. Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  6. Ability to follow directions.
  7. Ability to work independently.
  8. Ability to assist with maintaining records of student progress.
  9. Excellent organizational skills.
  10. Ability to resolve conflict.
  11. Dependable, reliable, and protective of sensitive/confidential information.
  12. Willingness to attend training.
  13. Ability to remain calm under stressful situations.
  14. Ability to care for, supervise, and nurture children.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  1. Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis. 
  2. Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  3. Duties include frequent walking and physical activity, as well as use of hands and arms for signaling and light lifting/carrying. Must have the ability to move about the classroom/building and school property, including bending, pushing/pulling, lifting, twisting, climbing, stooping, or crouching to complete work-related tasks with and without students. 
  4. The ability to listen and effectively orally communicate information and ideas to a diverse population.
  5. Ability to effectively discern information and formulate appropriate action(s).
  6. Ability to critically think and provide appropriate solutions. 
  7. Ability to work effectively and efficiently.

Environmental Conditions:

Incumbents work in indoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. Duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures, including work on slippery and/or uneven surfaces. Work environment includes working around students, school equipment, and office equipment. 

 

Work Schedules:

Must be available to report during the school year consistent with the district’s school year calendar.

 

Background Checks:

The individual selected for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check.   

Salary : $19 - $23
