Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor sewer system machinery and equipment, ensuring optimal performance during your shift
- Conduct routine inspections of sewer lines, pumps, valves, and related infrastructure using measuring instruments and diagnostic tools
- Maintain accurate records of system operations, measurements, and maintenance activities in compliance with safety standards in production
- Perform manual tasks such as cleaning, repairing, or replacing sewer components, including seam construction and materials handling
- Assist in troubleshooting system issues promptly to minimize downtime and uphold quality standards in production
- Follow all safety protocols related to sewer operations, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to safety standards in production
- Support warehouse activities related to materials handling and supply management for sewer maintenance projects
We are seeking a qualified and motivated individual for the position of Second Shift Systems Operator in the Sewer Division. The ideal candidate will have experience maintaining municipal sanitary and storm sewer systems and a strong work ethic.
Under the direction of the Sewer Division Supervisor and Public Works Director, the Systems Operator is responsible for assisting with the routine maintenance, repair, and operation of the Township's sanitary and storm infrastructure, driving, cleaning, operating, and servicing trucks and equipment as assigned, and manual labor work in connection with installing and maintaining infrastructure. This position also performs other other related duties as required to support Sewer Division operations.
Work hours for this position are Monday through Friday 3:00 PM - 11:30 PM (2:30 PM - 11:00 PM during summer months).
Responsibilities:
- Assists in routine collection system maintenance, inclusive of pumping stations.
- Responds to emergency calls including, but not limited to, sewer backups, downed trees, etc.
- Drives and operates dump trucks, jetter, and jet-vac as required.
- Keeps check on pressure gauges for hydraulic pumps and other mechanisms.
- Assists with other maintenance and laboring duties.
- Keeps simple records; checks and assists in the maintenance of equipment.
- Cleans and maintains buildings and grounds of facilities, housing systems and equipment.
- Ensure safety procedures are complied with, responsible standards of workmanship and output are maintained, and desired objectives achieved.
- Responds to and may work along with the Public Works employees in the clearing of snow and/or emergency conditions or situations.
- Works with other Public Works divisions during leaf collection operations.
- May be on twenty-four (24) hour call periodically.
- Responsible for continuing training and self-improvement/development.
Education/Certifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Skills / Requirements:
- Interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in equipment maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of water treatment processes.
- Ability to operate office equipment (personal computer, photocopier).
- Ability to collect and analyze data effectively.
- Skilled in heavy equipment operation.
- Familiarity with wastewater treatment procedures.
- Valid NJ Commercial Driver's License Class "B" with tanker endorsement, or ability to obtain tanker endorsement.
- Competency in tanker operations.
- Ability to lift 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects up to 50 pounds.
- New Jersey residency required pursuant to NJSA 54:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70).
