Job Summary:

The Deputy Marshal I is an entry-level position responsible for developing the essential skills required to perform law enforcement duties. This role assists in maintaining public peace and safety through the prevention, detection, and investigation of criminal activity; the apprehension of offenders; and the delivery of aid to citizens during emergencies. The position supports the protection of civil rights and ensures compliance with applicable tribal, federal, state, county, and municipal laws, along with agency policies, procedures, and regulations. Employees in this classification work under close supervision while progressing through structured training and gaining proficiency in all fundamental law enforcement functions.

Job Duties:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Must attend and participate in required training through the Federal Law Enforcement Center (FLETC) and/or the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET) to develop the physical, cognitive, and professional competencies necessary for the Deputy Marshal role, including foundational instruction in law enforcement procedures and an understanding of role-specific responsibilities.
  • Develop a working knowledge of the duties, functions, and responsibilities of a Deputy Marshal throughout the training process.
  • Complete the required 12‑week Field Training Officer (FTO) program to gain practical, supervised experience in field operations.
  • Review and adhere to policies, procedures, laws, rules, and regulations governing Marshal Service operations within the Cherokee Nation jurisdiction.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of the Cherokee Nation patrol area, including geography, community needs, and jurisdictional considerations.
  • Conducts routine inspections and preventive maintenance on equipment; follows manufacturer guidelines; troubleshoots operational issues; reports required repairs to the supervisor; and evaluates new equipment technologies for operational effectiveness.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned to support overall law enforcement operations.

  • Possess a basic working knowledge of subject matter.

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Must live within Tribal Jurisdictional Service Area.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application.

COMPUTER SKILLS

To perform this job successfully, an individual should know Database, Internet, and Word Processing software.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting.
  • Must meet and maintain eligibility for Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) deputation.
  • Must obtain First Aid, and CPR certifications within six (6) months of hire and then maintain certifications throughout employment.
  • Must successfully complete first available law enforcement certification of FLETC and/or CLEET.
  • Must successfully complete first available reciprocity/Criminal Jurisdiction in Indian Country (CJIC).
  • Must obtain a Special Law Enforcement Commission (SLEC) immediately upon successful completion of FLETC and CLEET training and must maintain the SLEC throughout employment.
  • Must pass the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI).


OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
  • Must maintain no restrictions from testifying in any federal, tribal, and state court while employed with Cherokee Nation Marshal Service (CNMS).
  • Must pass firearms qualifications semi-annually.
  • Must meet and maintain periodic background adjudication for law enforcement.
  • Must comply with Cherokee Nation Marshal Service Policies, Procedures, and Code of Conduct.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Must meet and maintain medical suitability.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; explosives; risk of radiation and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
