Correctional Officer

Position Summary

Assists commanding officers. Supervises daily inmate activities. Provides safety and security for inmates and employees.

Essential Functions of the Job

· Books inmates in and out

· Passes out commissary to inmates

· Performs walk through inspections of pipe chase

· Resolves inmate disputes

· Files internal and external documentation

· Observes inmates

· Operates control board

· Indigent appointments

· Takes inmates to dental, medical and Emergency Room

· Performs hourly checks and head counts

· Passes out medication and take blood pressure, blood sugar and check temperatures

· Monitors church, visitation, and library privileges

· Ensures the care and custody of inmates is maintained

· Answers phones

· Researches inmate inquires

· Feeds and picks up meal trays and cups

· Passes out mail and operate book cart

· Searches incoming inmates

· Supervises inmate recreation

· Perform cell searches

· Monitors cameras

· Provides hygiene materials

· Security of inmate property

· Supervision of inmate visitation

Additional duties and responsibilities

· Additional duties as directed by commanding officers

· Cover other shifts as needed

· Removes inmates from cells for haircuts

· Takes photos (mug shots) and fingerprints

· Takes care of and log grievances

· Perform 15 minute checks on sick and suicidal inmates

· Operates copy machine

· Transports inmates

· Reclassifies inmates

· Deposits money for inmates

· Maintain cleanliness of corrections facility

· Performs computer maintenance

· Researches criminal histories

· Assist with dispatch when needed

· Ability to remain professional when dealing with confrontational inmates

· Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information

Work Environment

· Exposure to dangerous and unpredictable people

· Exposure to bodily fluids and communicable diseases

Physical Requirements

· Ability to remain upright and move for extended periods of time

· Ability to run short and long distances

· Ability to jump, climb, bend, squat and run

· Ability to kneel, stoop, crawl, twist, reach above shoulders, grasp, pull, bend, shove, climb stairs, steps

· Ability to perform defensive tactics and restrain inmates

· Ability to move 50 lbs

· Exposure and/or subject to situation causing high levels of stress

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

· High School Diploma or equivalent (Required)

· National Crime InformationCenter (NCIC)/Texas Crime Information Center(TCIC) Certification

· Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification

· Jailer Certification

· Training or experience in bookkeeping

Pay: $17.00 - $20.00 per hour
