POSITION SUMMARY

The Parks Worker position is an individual contributor engaged in maintenance, construction, and repair of the County’s public parks and recreation facilities. Duties include routine and heavy manual tasks, and the safe operation of various tools and equipment in a mission to care for the County’s public parks and facilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification.   • Safely operate heavy equipment including road vehicles, mowers, tractors, field drag, utility vehicles,and other equipment as necessary in landscape maintenance work.
  • Utilize a variety of light power tools including weed eater, blower, edger, and carpentry tools; Utilizevarious hand tools such as field liner, hand sprayer, pruners, rakes, shovels and other equipment asnecessary in landscape maintenance work.
  • Perform routine maintenance on all such equipment.
  • Water, mow, and weed trim athletic fields; maintain playgrounds and surrounding areas of the parks;and assist in park renovation.
  • Prune trees and shrubs; plant trees, flowers and shrubs; rake leaves and clean walks, fields, courts, andother facilities
  • Prepare and maintain athletic fields, playgrounds, swimming pools, and related facilities;
  • Clean restrooms and pick up litter around parks and medians.
  • Perform unskilled and semi-skilled special projects involving the maintenance, construction, and repairof park and recreational facilities.
  • Apply pesticides and fertilizers safely.
  • Perform manual labor including repeated lifting of heavy objects, stooping, bending and twisting.
  • May assist in other areas of the department as necessary.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications Requirements:

Education and/or Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent. No experience is required. Previous experience is preferred.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add and subtract whole numbers.

Communication and Reasoning Abilities:

Ability to comprehend and follow oral instructions. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple instructions and follow established safety rules and departmental policies and procedures. Ability to deal with situations that are standardized and routine in nature. Ability to communicate and interact with co-workers and immediate supervisor.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Possession of a valid Georgia Driver’s License (Class C) and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of hand tools and equipment such as lawn mowers, tractors, weed eaters, blowers, etc.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The employee is moderately exposed to vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Must be available for work on weekends, evenings and holidays.
