Job Description
Summary/Objective
The kiln fireman is responsible for the transferring and moving of the greenware kiln cars through the firing process making sure the established standards and safety procedures are met or exceeded.
Essential Functions

1. Ascertain and coordinate activities with the off-going shift Kiln Fireman as to the present state of the burning process and equipment repairs or maintenance on-going.
2. Confer with the Burning Supervisor or the Burning Log Book for shift instructions.
3. Visually inspect all burners, fans and ticket board for the greenware brick kiln cars rotating from the holding rooms, pre-dryers, dryers and kilns. In case of power outage, kiln burners may have to be re-lighted and kilns re-started.
4. Inspect greenware kiln car prior to placing in kiln for package stability and kiln car condition. If package is questionable, straighten brick stacks to stabilize.
5. Operate electric/hydraulic transfer car (tram) moving loaded kiln cars through the drying and burning process and onto the designated packaging line tracks using a capstan and rope or hydraulic car mover. Empty kiln cars are transported on tram and moved onto the moulding department clean-off tracks.
6. Fill kiln sand seal hoppers with sand.
7. Lubricate kiln car wheels.
8. Measure and weigh a brick from each kiln car coming out of the kilns which is recorded in the Log Book along with burning zones temperature checks.

9. Maintain clean and orderly work areas.
10. Perform and/or assist in equipment maintenance and repairs.

Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, heat, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. This position is generally 40 hours per week. Note: Shift start and end hours as well as work days vary depending on the shift. Some overtime is to be expected.
