The Ophthalmology Technician under close supervision, assists the physicians and other clinical support personnel to perform diagnostic tests necessary for evaluation of patient eye problems. The incumbent in this role performs basic ophthalmic testing procedures including, but not limited to: visual acuity, history taking, tonometry, lensometry, motility, pupil assessment, visual fields and may perform refraction. He/She will administer dilation or anesthetic drops. The Ophthalmology Technician also performs various clerical, stocking and maintenance functions, when needed.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinates scheduling of patient appointments.
  • Interviews patients and documents ocular and medical histories.
  • Performs a variety of routine tests using ophthalmic instruments that provide diagnostic information including, but not limited to: visual acuity, intraocular pressures by Goldmann applanation tonometry, basic motility, confrontation visual fields, cover test, pachymetry and lensometry.
  • Assists the physician during diagnostic procedures, including instrumentation, sterile preparations and documentation.
  • Administers topical medications or diagnostic drugs as required by the provider for testing or treatment.
  • Prepares and positions patient for diagnostic tests and procedures.
  • Assists the physician with patient education pertaining to the treatment prescribed.
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Prepares procedure and exam rooms; inventory equipment and supplies; replenishes supplies and equipment.

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Performs basic triage per specific office protocol procedures.
  • Maintains professional appearance and personal conduct at all times.
  • Adheres to employer work practices as described in TDC Occupational Exposure Plan policy.
  • Works as a team member within the optometry department and all other departments.
  • Effectively copes with typical job stress.
  • Documents work processes as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and modified at manager’s discretion.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be able to perform Goldmann applanation tonometry accurately and efficiently to ensure proper patient flow.
  • Knowledge of ocular diseases and systemic diseases affecting the eye.
  • Knowledge of basic eye care and hygienic methods and practices involving the treatment of the eye.
  • Knowledge of ophthalmic drugs.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills including the ability to manage interactions with difficult people.
  • Must be able to act calmly and effectively in a busy or stressful situation.
  • Adherence to all policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards for safety, attendance, punctuality and personal appearance.
  • Ability to multi-task efficiently and effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone and in writing.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite products including Excel, Word, and Outlook, plus a variety of other word-processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail and presentation software.
  • Ability and willingness to travel locally, regionally and nationwide up to 10% of the time.
  • Spoken and written fluency in English.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE CRITERIA:

  • High school diploma or equivalent education required.

  • A minimum of 1 year of satisfactory, full-time work experience under ophthalmologic supervision, including training in all skills listed in professional criteria.

  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) preferred.
    Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AMA) or American Red Cross required w/in first 90 days of employment.
